Calls to adopt a pensioner

May 22 01:01pm

The Combined Pensioners' Association has urged Australians to get behind a campaign to adopt a pensioner. A third of Australia's retirees are struggling to afford life's essentials.

Being on a very low budget, that's all they buy so if the prices go up, it's really panic stations.

The Association wants the Federal Government to immediately increase the supplement for single-aged pensioners.

Paul Versteege from the Combined Pensioners' Association explains what the problem is and how people can help.

How desperate is the situation for pensioners?

"The situation is two million aged pensioners, the majority are doing quite well but about one-third are doing very, very badly. They are, by any stretch of the imagination."

"So the situation has been quite desperate for some time and the Budget last week was a real, real disappointment."

"Because one of the things is that the aged pension really doesn't keep up with cost of living, on $273 a week, which isn't living, does it?"

"That is the big issue. They are falling way behind"

"In the Budget papers, there was an interesting graph showing how much the staples of life have gone up, bread and food and transport."

"It is the basics of life they can't afford. Being on a very low budget, that is all they buy. If the prices of those things go up, it's really panic stations for low-income pensioners."

What do you suggest people to do if they want to help?

Obviously the adoption a pensioner scheme is a great idea. If they want to do that, they should. But the real help they can give is right there in their community. Fu know people that are elderly, get to know them and help them if they need help.

I am a health professional and work/care for the elderly in the community. The site http://adopt-a-pensioner.yourwebspa ce.com.au/ concerns me greatly. There is no security, privacy, contacts, or other information on this site and can allow pensioners to be open for abuse from scum in the community.

I wonder how is the average pensioner going to find the money so he can find the website to be able click here.
When they do not have enough money to buy food
The original idea is great, but how many of us know of a pensioner that owns a computer.

Have you thought of pensioners who do not have access to a computer and emails?

I think if everyone adopts pensioners then once again the Government will sit back and do nothing. It is a good idea for some pensioners, but I too am a pensioner and I want to see us rally in Canberra and anywhere else it takes to make the Government give us an increase in pensions. We need to act

A great idea and getting involved in our local community is definately the way to go. However, the site for registering for this initiative very awkward and despite registering at the beginning of the week, have been unable to access the site. Pitty if this dampens peoples efforts to participate.

My husband and I both suffer with mental illness and are on the disability pension, we also have 4 children. Is this scheme just for aged pensioners? Or is is available to people on the disability pension as well?

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
