Steve Irwin's special place under threat

- Terri starts petition to lobby govt. against development

Last year the Federal Government bought 135,000 hectares of land at Cape York.

A company (Cape Alumina) has lodged mining lease applications for the site known as the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, planned as a tribute to Steve Irwin, Wildlife Warrior.

The land, according to Terri, is very important environmentally, encompassing wetlands which "provide a critical water source to threatened habitat".

It even holds special significance for Terri as a connection to Steve's final days before his tragic death.

"He spent some of his final weeks there doing crocodile research," Terri told Sunrise.

As well as this, the land is also home to several rare and vulnerable plants and wildlife

Terri is fighting the application in which company plans to mine 12,300 hectares of the reserve for bauxite.

The NT Government is quoted as saying it believes the mining can be done sustainably.

Yeh, maybe the petition was not working, but just go to Australia Zoo's site. Just because Y7 messed up, does not mean that you should not try harder to sign the petition.
This is a true cause worth fighting for just as Steve Irwin did throughout his short life.

I was interested in this story because we have a similar battle on the Liverpool Plains. The NSW Government is selling coal exploration licences on the Liverpool Plains, near Gunnedah, and refusing to fund independant studies of the impact of mining on the precious underground water resources.

I have to agree with Terri and her family and friends because it's where Steve did his conservation work and it's his home. And it's the animals' home. It's where they feel safe and comfortable. It's like taking your home away or taking your farm away. We have to agree with Teri.

australia zoo and The Irwin family is as australian as you will ever get. Destroying 135,000 ha of wildlife reserve just for mining is un-australian of the government. If not for the Irwin family australia would have no idea what wanders we have in our own backyard. AUSTRALIA ....GET ON BOARD.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
