Fuelwatch - and finding cheaper fuel now

- Federal plan to monitor petrol prices for consumers

The Federal government has decided to formalise a national approach to petrol price monitoring. Beginning by December, 2008, the FuelWatch scheme will see petrol stations in regional and metropolitan areas forced to publish prices 24 hours in advance.

The aim is to provide greater choice for motorists. There is no conclusive evidence prices are lowered by such a system.

"What FuelWatch will do is give motorists much greater power," ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel told ABC Radio on Wednesday.

"They'll know when the price is going to increase. They'll also know when they're going to decrease and they can therefore defer their buying until they (fuel prices) get to their lowest points."

How to track prices now

NSW has now come into line with WA and VIC in offering a petrol price-watch scheme providing daily updates on average process in the capital city and surrounds.

The Petrol Commissioner wants to introduce Fuel Watch similar to WA and savings will be 5 cents per litre. Assuming a stable dollar and oil price, in Adelaide the cheapest price is 138.2/litre (14 Apr 2008, 3.30pm ex shop discount schemes) then can we expect the price of petrol to be 133.2/litre.

I moved to WA 18 months ago. The real benefit of fuel watch is being able to check petrol prices along your route before you leave home. You can see at a glance where it's cheapest...and it stays that price all day...so you can just follow the cheapest petrol each time you buy.

How would fule watch combat prices between NSW and QLD when they are often as much bas 20 cents per litre less expensive than in NSW. The only way we will ever have regulated fuel is if all states are tretaed the same by the Government, why does this not happen, it should never be more expensive.

I would like to know why country towns are penalised by expensive petrol, we do not obtain the benefits of cities & their cheap day prices. Considering most towns do not have the luxury of public transport, we rely heavily on our car as our only mode of mobility.Too much money "bring to the country

hi gang does it sit funny that we pay double for the same petrol on monday and then on tuesday the petrol has been sitting in the same tank has not been change no tanker delivery where do they justify the price increase.

Today in Mt Lawley (inner suburb of Perth, WA) is: unleaded 138.5 cpl ; Bio diesel (which is generally 3-4 cpl cheaper than standard diesel) is 158.5 cpl and LPG is 61.9 cpl. The only real benefit to WA's fuelwatch is that the price stays the same ALL day. I doesn't actually make fuel cheaper!

Petrol prices are just another blow for the battlers in the bush. I spend one days worth of wages a week driving to work in the next town. We only have one service station and no public transport. The farmers get tax rebates. What about the rest of us?

How can petrol prices jump 10 cents in a matter of hours when the petrol station hasnt had a tanker in to fill the tanks for a few days to a week, Its not right that the petrol stations can pay a price for the fuel and sell it for say 1.30/L then the next day sell exactly the same fuel for 1.40/L

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
