Food additives as bad as they look

Apr 11 07:16am
[IMG1 L]  A study finds additives are responsible for a third of all hyperactive children

The news may not come as a surprise to many, but is nevertheless alarming.

These colourings are found in lollies, softdrinks, chips and even processed meats.

It seems that just as the general public has been trying to cut fat and sugar in their diets there has been an explosion in the use of artificial sweeteners and flavour enhancers.

The study

A Southampton study by Prof. Jim Stevenson proves additives affect children and not just ADHD sufferers.

The additives' effects include hyperactivity, aggression, concentration problems and restlessness

UK study warns of "E" additives- or artificial colourings

Here are the colourings you should look out for, along with their numbers:

  • Sunset yellow(110)
  • Carmoisine (122)
  • Tartrazine(102)
  • Ponceau 4R (124)
  • Sodium benzoate (211)

Experts hope this study will lead to clear labeling laws and even bans, as advertising is often misleading thay also recommend people read labels closely.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
