Food additives as bad as they look

Apr 11 07:16am
[IMG1 L]  A study finds additives are responsible for a third of all hyperactive children

The news may not come as a surprise to many, but is nevertheless alarming.

These colourings are found in lollies, softdrinks, chips and even processed meats.

It seems that just as the general public has been trying to cut fat and sugar in their diets there has been an explosion in the use of artificial sweeteners and flavour enhancers.

The study

A Southampton study by Prof. Jim Stevenson proves additives affect children and not just ADHD sufferers.

The additives' effects include hyperactivity, aggression, concentration problems and restlessness

UK study warns of "E" additives- or artificial colourings

Here are the colourings you should look out for, along with their numbers:

  • Sunset yellow(110)
  • Carmoisine (122)
  • Tartrazine(102)
  • Ponceau 4R (124)
  • Sodium benzoate (211)

Experts hope this study will lead to clear labeling laws and even bans, as advertising is often misleading thay also recommend people read labels closely.

My 4 year old son has autism and we have discovered that artificial colours ( in particular yellow) sends him ballistic, he won't sleep, is highly aggressive and likely to injure himself or us. By cutting out the colours we have a far nicer but still hyperactive child.

Thanks for the information..... but why stop there?
Can you answer me this.. it is legal to smoke, drink alchohol, but illegal to drink pure natural milk, straight from the cow.
The government experts will say that it is a safety issue, however history says otherwise.. rights? what rights?

31 years ago our son was diagnosed Hyperkinetic (ADHD) and put on American Fiengold Diet. No artificial food colours & flavours, avoid bright lights, colours, loud sounds. Amazing change in child and no need for Ritalin. I ran local group for information and saw many children changed with diet.

My 7 year old son has ADD and the doctors wanted to put him on drugs and my husband & I looked at food additives. We now have a son that is well behaved and tries harder. Everything in my house is now home cooked. It's not as hard as it sounds, it's very easy.

My son suffered the effects of food additives for many years. I found that the main additive that effected him was102 tartrazine, yellow colouring, was even added to strawberry milk. kids are so affected today as they don't play outside much anymore, thus they are not building up there ammune system

Certain food additives have enormous effects on behaviour and learning ability. There are many alternatives available that are safe. If you live in Melbourne come on an Additive Audit shopping tour, or have a food intolerance expert talk to your group about food additives. www.additiveeducation.com.

When my son was about 3 we put him on a reduced additive diet and it made a HUGE difference. His problem wasn't hyperactivity it was that certain additives made him aggressive and angry. Some of his triggers were ice-cream and orange juice. He is 15 now and a beautiful teenager.

Now if only we could get these nasty additives out of our school canteens. I'm sure teachers and parent volunteers would notice the difference in and out of the classroom. Let's hope those who make the decisions about what we sell to children take notice.
