Should the torch relay be abandoned?

Apr 08 08:11am

After much protesting and violence, the Olympic torch is looking more like a guiding light for controversy and anger than a 'sacred flame' of peace and unity.

China's torch relay drama is a long way from the Sydney 2000 experience of crowds waving happily from the sidelines with minimum security.

Should the torch relay be abandoned - what do you think?  Tell us below...

It seems that sport is becoming very political and not dedicated to the sport. But I do believe the chinese are a very cruel race and over the years its been anti tibetians, please can't the world live in peace and harmoney, I'm so tired of conflict in the world, please be kind to the human race.

Boycotting Chinese made goods is a bad idea- that just hurts the ordinary Chinese worker. Playing sport with them is a whole different matter however! For years we wouldn't play Rugby or Cricket with South Africa during Apartheid... Why is China different?

Don't ban the torch. If we give in to these protestors and stop a peaceful event such as the torch relay then we have to give in on everything. I will run with it if necessary. I won't be bullied by them. There are other ways of getting a message across other than by violence, abuse and bullying

Protestors are nothing short of urban terrorists. They are overgrown schoolyard bullies. Find a more peaceful way of getting your message out there guys and I'll listen.

Whilst these protests may be for a good cause, it is important to look at the affect they are having around the world. They're ruining the spirit of the games, which promote unification not violence. Yes, China has differing political morals but to edify all involved in the games, let's be peaceful!

For how long do we as fair & just people have to tolerate the injustices of countries like China? For how long do we bow to acts of inhumanity and cruelty? When do we as people with a conscious think of the future and say ENOUGH! If everyone boycotted the Olympics China would know we are serious.

i think the torch relay should go ahead but go too the airports and come down and stand on a stage or something like that so then peole get too see it but the torrch bearers are not in danger, having the olympics there may help change them by drawing attention they cant stop all media

People seem to be forgetting that one of the conditions that China agreed to in their application for the games was that they improved the situation of human rights in China. The Olympic Games is a forum for peace and unity which I would assume has kindness and equality as its basis.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
