Sunrise Hospital SOS

Feb 28 09:22am

Four years ago on this very show, we interviewed every Australian health minister. Their solutions have not come to fruition.

Kevin Rudd has now set up a taskforce to look at the same thing we talked about four years ago.

We already know the problems. We want the solutions.

I have worked overseas in a dozen hospitals in two countries and am appalled at the state of the health care in my own country!

There are solutions to this problem and Nurses have the answers! We need to be LISTENED too, for the sake of our patients and our own sanity !

Over 80 comments now reveal that nursing shortages affect nurses on an hourly basis, limiting their effectiveness and adding to stress.

Trivial matters such as staff parking shortages and lazy managers are typical time-wasters.

Most disturbing are the tales stillborn babies after repeated attempts at getting hospitals to pay attention to distressed mums to be.

my brother's appendix burst & he was diagnosed at one hospital but they couldnt operate because he was too young so he was transfered to the one that could... after another 5hrs waiting in the er room he was rushed in for surgery... his appendix has burst 5days before hand. Drs need a look at too.

I agree with the Sunrise team and the public the hopsitals right across Australia need urgent attention, the waiting lists are to long, there isn't enough doctors and nurses in the hospitals, I've heard they close wards downs when its a quiet time which should never happen.

GPs and the public are also responsible as they sometimes really abuse the system. We often get referral from GPs to review patients whom they havent even examined and so obviously not requiring hospital review. Some people come to public hospital ED for trivial things just because its free.

I don't won't to diminish the problem, as it is a real problem, but after seeing the Michael Moore doco called Sicko, I think we don't realise how better off we are compared to the USA, but maybe not as good as other places, for which we could learn from. Can I suggest people look at it this doco.

My wife is a Nursing Manager in Brisbane.
She does International interviews to recruit nurses. Each time they discover the pay rate, they retract their job applications. There is no Nursing or Doctor shortage in Queensland; it is just that no body will work as hard as they do, for such little pay.

About 2 years ago I worked as a kitchen hand in a local pub. On a Sunday I was earning more than my wifes daily rate, who was a Registered Nurse, with 4 years University training, and with masive amounts of responsability

I am a Registered Nurse I have worked in the public hospital system for 28yrs and this is the worse situation I have seen.
We don't have enough trained staff, we are using Trainee Nures Aids and Assistance in Nursing as subsitutes for Reg. Nurse or Enrolled Nurses. This puts enormous pressure on us.

I have been a registered nurse for about 30 yrs, I now work in a small country hospital and often have to work without the backup of doctors, it is stressful for patients, staff, ambulance officers who then have to transfer to a larger base hospital taking away our ambo's.

Mr Rudds recent call to draw back nurses was a farse $6000 to come back !! what about us in the system who struggle daily and never gave up for our patients sake !!!

After loosing my baby(stillborn) at 21 wks pregnant, I was placed in the birthing ward due to shortage of beds. Being surrounded by crying newborn babies after loosing mine, it was un-describable. Hospital staff were great, but the shortage of beds is a major issue
