Boy escapes from 8m plunge in car [UPDATED]

Nov 03 01:51pm

Police say a seven-year-old boy has escaped with cuts and brurises after a four-wheel drive he was in went over a cliff at Austinmer, south of Sydney.

The SUV rolled down a driveway, through two fences and over an embankment before landing on the beach below.

It is not yet known if the boy jumped from the car into nearby bushes or was thrown from the vehicle.

The incident occurred about 9.30 AEST this morning, on Mountain Road.

Police say the boy released the car's brake.

"It appears that the child has engaged the neutral gear of the vehicle and the vehicle travelled down Kennedy Street, Austinmer and over the embankment," Inspector Paul Allman said.

The boy "redefined the word lucky", a police woman said.

The boy was taken to Wollongong hospital for a check-up.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
