Is yelling the new spanking?

Oct 29 08:31am

- Many parents now yell because they can't smack
-Yelling can cause more trouble with kids than it solves.

Professor Matt Sanders – Psychologist and developer of Triple P Program - helped us this morning with ways parents can avoid yelling at their kids.

Many parents are as sick and tired ofbeing told how to parent as they are of managing their children.

How to ask?
  • Ask once
  • Count to 5 to yourself
  • Ask a second time
  • Count to 5 to yourself
  • Back up with quiet time for the child

How to avoid yelling

  • Make a commitment to NOT yell
  • Give better instructions
  • Use a calm, controlled voice
  • Give yourself time out, then try again
  • Follow through on consequences

this new yelling thing is unbelievable there are so many rules of things you can and cant do with or to your own child give it 5 - 10 yrs and the only thing you can do is give birth to them. i understand that belting your child is wrong and excessive yelling for no reason is to but seriously

Do gooders,& Government interferance have removed all authority from parents and created homes with no parameters of behaviour for the children to follow. Kids then become like lost souls and cling to friendships formed at an early age. Are these friendships when broken, the cause of youth suicide?

Give me a break, we have children in australia that are subjected to physical abuse, domestic violence and drug and alcohol abuse. There are far worse things than occasionally yelling at your child when they're naughty.

My wife and I have a two year little boy who is getting to his defiant stage where he is having more of his say. But we do use an authouritive voice and we use and "Good Boy" when he does do the right thing and we are having good results. Maybe they should come and raise them for us.

I'm 22 and my parents were able to yell and smack and I'm not scared, i think that its just crazy! i'm not saying that some parents take smacking a little to far they do. i also worked in childcare before i went on maternity leave, so ive seen all types of parenting... children need discipline!

As a childcare worker, I would lose my job if I were to yell or smack a child in my care. It is amazing what a firm voice, calm and clear directions and consistent behavioural management strategies can do to improve childrens behaviour.

You cannot leave a child under 12yrs at home alone - this is against the law. Yes children do need discipline but there are ways of doing this without smacking and yelling, but don't forgot its also about consistency with age appropriate behvaiour management.

While Im completely against abuse and parents who scream at their kids all the time, I was smacked as a child and, if i didnt listen when my parents told me "No" three times I would be yelled at. It wasnt "damaging" to me, it just gave me a healthy respect for my parents while I was young.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
