What should the new elephant be called?

Jul 05 11:02pm

- We're naming names. Well, you are.

With the wonderful arrival of Australia's first elephant to be born here, it's time you told us ...

What name do you think should be given to the little 100kg male calf?

The calf was born at Taronga Zoo just after 3am on July 4 to a 12-year-old Asian elephant named Thong Dee.

"(Staff) were with her throughout the night and have been sleeping at the barn to support Thong Dee the instant she went into labour," Cooper said.

Thong Dee, formerly a Bangkok street elephant, was said to be surprised by the birth! That may help you pick a name...

How about "Alenah" which is how the Thais informally pronounce "what is it?"

My family gave me a Siamese cat for my birthday a few years ago. I searched for Thai names and came across this one = "Kwone-Jai" which means 'apple of one's heart'. This is not a literal translation, I just know it means someone special to you.

Hi I would like to call the baby elephant Kee Len which means playful, frisky and mischievous in Thai. I thought this would be a nice name for him because in the footage i have seen of him he looks playful.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
