Can bosses view your emails?

Jun 22 08:42am

- The Utegate affair gripping parliament has exposed the need for emails to be accessed at a later date.

There is conjecture over the rights and abilities of employers to read the emails of their staff.

And what of emails you send at Internet cafes or airport lounges, should they be viewable and traceable, even if you delet evidence?

Do you think bosses should be able to read your emails, even if they are on provate email accounts you access at work?

Ambulance Service NSW Paramedics have actually been denied/blocked e-mail or web access to an association they formed to protect their own interests, the Emergency Medical Service Protection Association This is an obvious violation of their Freedom of Association!!!

There should be no personal emails at work. Gees It is work not a personal communications centre. Employees are employed to work not socialise. For all thos snivallibertarians out there that say this is too harsh then eat me.

Well I use Gopoppi servers at work and my niece uses it at school.
Any personal emails that I want to send are sent through my hotmail account that only I have access to through gopoppi servers.
Work can see nothing that I do and I work for a high security company that blocks everything!!

Work that four letter word means you are being paid to work, you send private emails whilst at work as a boss to me they have the right to read, delete any emails that aren't related to work. Work is work, I'd block any employee that sent non related emails at work.

I have recently (Wednesday before last) been dismissed for "inappropriate use of company IT resources" for sending emails and receiving emails that were of a personal nature. The emails were deemed to be sexually explicit - they were a few flirty emails back and worth between consenting adults!

Computers at work are provided for work purposes not for private use. Sad that bosses have to have monitor the usage but they want you performing work tasks and not putting the computer system at risk with inappropiate sites or language. Firewalls can shut down the whole system and stop all computer

As long as the emails are being sent during the workers own personal time (ie lunch or after work) and is not inappropriate then it is ok. Life still goes on even if we have to work! I work in an environment where it is difficult to communicate via phone and email is the most convenient way.
