Blog: Hospitals a political casualty

I hate interviewing pollies.

You can’t get a straight answer out of them.

They are just very media savvy

And they spin you a load of bulldust cos’ they know how much time they’ve got.

They waffle on … answered no hard questions

Neither Roxon nor Abbott gave us anything concrete!

Health is the number 1 issues for Australians. And particularly hospitals.

And they’re sick and tired of pollies blaming each other.

States blame federal, federal blames states. And low and behold nothing gets done.

"That’s pathetic. UnAustralian."

Today, we wanted a benchmark, something that would fix hospitals. So we went and talked to the Nurses Federation.

We found it 3750 new beds would it. Nurses said beds are the issue. And it would cost $1.2billion.

Considering both parties have proposed $32billion in tax cuts, they do have the money.

We expect a decent hospital system and neither of them would commit.

So now, for the rest of the campaign, we are gunna bang on about 3750 new beds.

World Best Practice is that the average occupancy of beds is 85% and that allows a margin - to take into account spikes in demand. That’s World Best Practice.

Which we would expect in this country.

But, we have an average occupancy of 95%. And during winter, it’s 121%!

So 21% more people than beds come in.

As a result, Emergency gets blocked up just as there are no new beds.

No other beds in hospital.

That’s pathetic. UnAustralian.

We’ve told them we’ll keep coming back to you on it. We’ll stay on em’.

And if they announce something on the campaign trail, we’ll be asking “Where’s the funding?”

This is all well and good but where are they planning on getting the nurses to be able to look after another 3750 beds. We have a hard enough time now trying to retain the nurses we have let alone trying to recruit more. what are they going to do about that???

Howard has missed the plot with his Education gimmee in his election spiel. We need more education resources, teachers and facilities - not a rebate for "free" education!

Kochie, mate i have to agree with you.Our so called hospitals are pathetic.I watched your story Monday morning and you're right.they could'nt answer your's or Mel's questions, they were beating round the bush.could'nt just give a simple yes or no..waiting lists in victorian hospitals is a joke..I have been on a 90 day waiting list at Monash medical centre for nearrly 120 days I do feel for the nurses who are trying so hard to cope with all their extra work juties.when are the governments going t

What about Aged Care? I wonder how many nurses working in aged care and the families and carers of older folk in residential care heard Tony Abbott “fob off” a very important equity issue this morning? G. The challenge of providing public and private health care is multi faceted. 3750 additional beds means additional medical, nursing, allied health and support staff as well as capital expenditure to house them and the necessary equipment. What we need is an honest debate in Australia about community expectation (with an ageing population) as well how we stop blame and cost shifting between the Federal and State jurisdictions. There is a global shortage in many health professions that we also need

what we need is more in beds in hospitals, more nurses and a better health system but to keep the current nurses and to get more nurses, they need better pay and conditions. its not wonder they have been going on strike! we also need more doctors. the current health system is up [profane] creek without a paddle. the education side of it needs to be relooked at, we need more of everything and made more affordable.
ppl in the emergency department dont want to be sitting and waiting for long hours. th
