Click here for your online school report

The UK is abolishing the traditional school report with an online system.

If successful, this new 'real-time' reporting plan could see British parents able to access their child's weekly results any time and make their teacher more accessible.

The British Government say it's the way forward but teachers complain it will make their heavy workload impossible to manage.

The plan may also hit snags with parents without computers and some teachers saying it's beyond their technical know-how.

"Ministers believe that the new reporting systems will make it easier for parents to be regularly involved in their children's education and will improve school standards."

Under the plan, the government will help low income families get online with the hope parents will be able to see attendance records, grades and discipline reports.

Jenny Branch , president of The Australian Council of State School Organisation, says the system wouldn't work here but has some merit. Jenny concedes the Australian system is flawed in making parents wait until the end of the year to get a thorough look at their child's progress.

"Schools have a responsibility to keep parents in the picture."

The other concern is teachers' time will be dominated answering emails.

"The idea of better and earlier communication is great but logistics are not the answer," says Jenny.

i would love my childs school to keep me up to date any way. I was sent a letter in the mail on the 3rd last day of school i was not the only parent telling me my child was identified as a student of concern over the year even though the report card said otherwise.

As a teacher of nearly 40 years experience I not only use email to communicate with parents but I give them my home and mobile phone numbers for them to call me at any time.

It works! I have helped many students this way. Once I gave another teacher forewarning when a parent was gunning for her.

School reports are done by teachers electronically. Teachers at our school have to be able to email to complete reports, so emailing parents is not a problem. I actually prefer email contact with parents as I don't have to play phone tag all day or wait until 6pm at night to phone working parents.

My daughter works as a group leader and has to write up progress notes daily, on the development and progress of the children.

I have worked in Aged Care and have had to do daily progress notes on clients up to 80-90 a week . It would be a good tool for teahers to report to parents this way.

As a high school teacher I regularly update parents on their childs progress. I utilise the school diary to communicate with parents and insist students have every test or assessment task signed to informed parents of achievements. Parents should also check workbooks for quantity & quality of work.

I'm a teacher and prefer email, even though I have over 200 students to teach a week. Not all parents have access to email, though, so this needs to be taken into consideration before implementing anything here. Also, some parents simply don't care about their kids or their success, which is sad.

I have a small problem with this article in the third paragraph. Why is it that teachers "complain" instead of comment or argue? Why is it that we are apparently seen by the media as small children stamping our feet rather than professionals making a point? We know what we are talking about; listen.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
