Net censorship debate speeds up

Jan 01 11:45am

Glenn Wheeler from 'The Morning Show' and writer Flip Shelton joined us today to discuss Internet censorship as planned by the Federal Government.

Telecommunications Minister Stephen Conroy has announced a plan for mandatory filters to protect children from offensive material online.

If successful, internet service providers will provide clean feeds to houses and schools that are free of pornography and inappropriate material.

Hosts: Flip, the Internet is essential for your work. Are you happy to have it censored?

Flip: It is a big can of worms. We need to get the parameters right. Once we talk about censorship - what I would like to see - the Government sorted out the spam issue. What was that?

I am happy to have it censored ...

What the Government should be concentrating their efforts on is the issue of spam because it is something that is clearly defined. We should sort that out before we get into the grey area.

Hosts: Glenn, are you in favour of this?

Glenn: The spam exercise, if the Government is going to get serious about proper censoring, getting the parameters right is a big issue. Spam - it's just - I can't understand why we haven't already addressed this issue of spam. There is way, way too much of it. If it controls the violence and the pornography side of things for kids, terrific. Parents who want to opt out, opt out. That is not too hard.

Hosts: What if it slows down your system?

Glenn: That is another issue.

Hosts: Are you still prepared to pay the price for that?

Glenn: I am not prepared to sacrifice speed for that. We put men on the moon.Surely we can filter the important and the - the porn and violence and maintain high speed.

I have had filtered ISP for about 5 years. I LOVE IT.
Webshield is the ONLYTRUE filtered ISP in Australia. As a grandmother I am Free of ALL Spam. Free of ALL porno. Free of Gambling.
The lasr Government system was hacked into in 5min.
This system has not been hacked into

I'm not happy with the idea of net censorship. It brings about the question of 'what should be censored', and then before you know it, we've ended up like China, or Burma - without many of the sites we use almost daily, or with versions of such that are so heavily filtered that they aren't worth it.

For me the government has went mad cause it probally gonna ban all the website that we use on a daily bases and if u do have children and you are worried go to www.netalert.gov.au and download a free filter which will block all the website which have porno and swear words. It worked for me.

Parents need to be responsible for what their own children are doing. there is enough censorship with TV,Games etc let alone the last free bastion:the Internet. Maybe some of the people that are concerned need to get off their behinds and start doing some Parenting instead of leaving it to others.

If there needs to be net censorship in a home with children, the question I ask is Where are the parents who are supposed to be watching their children when they're on the net??? Maybe if parents were at home more often and actually cared about what their kids did, then we wouldn't have this problem

if the politicians & beauracrats mess up our internet by over-reacting & 'over-kill' the fix to this problem, it will be at their peril, ..they need to be very careful, & and not over re-act to political expediency...

"We put men on the moon.Surely we can filter the important and the - the porn and violence and maintain high speed."

How ignorant is that comment?!!

We put men on the moon, surley we can cure aids?
We put men on the moon, surley we can shoot lasers from our hands?

The first post about "Webshield" seems misinformed. Since you're a Grandmother, you can be certain that one of your grandchildren or his/her friends knows how to get past that filter VERY quickly.

Filtering on your HOME computer is FAR more effective than any ISP based filtering system.
You can choose what is blocked and tune it yourself.
Yes, you can get around these systems, but you can get around Senator Conroys proposed system as well.
