Bogans be-gone says Logan mayor

Jan 07 10:58am

Logan Mayor Pam Parker has a bee in her bonnet and that bee is a "Logan Bogan".

For many years people have given residents of Logan the slang term, "Bogan from Logan".

The term is used, jokingly, by those living in Logan and expats of the growing Queensland suburb (see map below).

But the mayor is not happy about it and is eager to change the suburb's image, launching a new advertising campaign that she hopes will replace the tag once and for all.

"The slogan certainly hasn't helped changing our image... it has a negative connotation," she tells Sunrise.

Despite the colloquial term tainting Logan's image, the city has grown four fold in recent years making it the sixth largest council in Australia.

With another 200,000 people expected to join the ‘Logarians' over the next 20 years, newcomers will be joining some upstanding locals who have made a name for themselves.

Supermodel Catherine McNeil, singer/pop star Darren Hayes, Winter Olympian Steven Bradbury, Footballer (NRL) Israel Falou.

McNeil, pictured, has been quoted describing herself as "the Bogan from Logan".

The mayor says the campaign featuring billboards pushing the term ‘Logarian' will be launched in the coming months and it's all about "bringing national and international investment to our city."

Ms Parker says the rapid growth of Logan means it will be looking to fill 70,000 new jobs in the next 20 years.

I thought there was some amusement at the fact that the Mayor was on TV trying to say that Logan isn't full of bogans while pronouncing the name Kathryn - Kafryn and pronouncing with - wiv. And they wonder why.....

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
