Should smacking be banned?

Jan 05 08:04am

The great debate is back. It has been suggested that a ban on all smacking can help reduce mental illness.

An analysis of child killings between 1991 and 2005 has lead mental health professionals to call for an Australian smacking ban for all parents and guardians.

What do you think? Would a smacking ban help? Tell us below...

Hi my name is Sara
I am 13. As a child I use to get smacked it was never nothing serious just a tap and I think I learned a lot from that. I think it is OK if it is just a tap other than that I don't agree.

Dear Koshy and Kylie,
As a Child I was smacked by hand and hit with a belt almost daily. I remember the Smacking but I don’t remember what for. I found this to be humiliating and soul crushing and it took me many years to overcome personal limitations due to fear.

Now as a parent and a teacher, I

Smacking Ban? Why not? The youth of today are running rings around authority already, I'll let my three year old go without smacking and send the results to the fools that make this law. Obviously a rule to be made for people with kids by people without kids.

NO I don't think a smacking ban would help. Kids today need respect and discipline and the way to do that is to give them a hiding now and then.If they do something wrong they have to know they'll be punished for it and in my experience other forms of punishment don't work.

Yes I think that smacking should be banned as it is a form of assault which any form of assualt is illegal so i think that it is already illegal so i think that it may alreay be banned

also i think that any form of punishment the parent should just sit down and talk to their kids instead of just lashingout but i still think that it is already ruled out as illegal

i think smacking is not unreasonable as a mother of two and one on the way,i smack but never execivly,i always send my child to their room and calm down if i feel angry and i alway disscuss so i beleive they know why the smack happened and re-enforce that i love them.

personally i believe a little tap on the hand is ok otherwise kids think they'll get away with anything, and on the point of smacking out of frusration, whether its banned or not those sort of people are still going to smack their children.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
