MatesRace - around Australia with $0

Jan 09 08:36am

On Boxing Day, the second annual MatesRace will kick off in Sydney. The Race sees six teams of two people race around Australia in 28 days, starting with no money.

The teams visit Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Broome, Darwin, Tennant Creek, Townsville, Brisbane then back to Sydney. The Race was formed to raise money for charity and teams are expected to complete charitable challenges around the country.

Charitable challenges include getting people to give blood, slap on sunscreen and feed the homeless. Teams have to busk for money, food and travel - but can call on friends or family around the country.

We'll be following 'Team Sunrise', mates Andrew Colagiuri and Mark Foy.

About Mark and Andrew
Mark and Andrew have worked side by side at Real Estate Agent Bresic Whitney for the past 3 years. Even though they have always got on at the office and regularly socialize they believe that this trip will definitely test the friendship. The boys have chosen Cure for Life as their charity because Andrew recently lost a close friend to a brain tumor and both believe that it is a great cause.

Mark is a typical, no non-sense country boy from Central Western NSW. Despite moving to the big smoke in year 7 he hasn’t lost his entire country manner. He loves strapping up the knee and hitting the rugby field before throwing down a few coldies at the Pub after the game. Marks favorite TV show is “Farmer wants a Wife”, he was the first to put his hand up for the event because he loves adventure and a challenge.

Andrew grew up in the Sutherland Shire although he now lives in Sydney’s East because it is closer to work. He loves his fitness, training up to 6 times a week, and competes in the odd triathlon. He credits his drive to the Rocky IV album on his IPod and is training to beat Mark in an upcoming triathlon. Andrew is more easy going and laid back and won’t mind letting Mark take the reins providing that he doesn’t burst into his favorite Garth Brookes song on the side of the road.

Both boys are pumped up for the trip. How will they survive on the road and how will they handle each other, we will have to wait and see.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
