In what is potentially the largest ever seizure of pirated music and movies in Australia, up to one million items were recovered in Sydney's Cabramatta today.
New South Wales Police say it took months of covert surveiilance to nab the major manufacturing ring who regularly changed suburbs to avoid detecton.
The team had been using a shop front in Cabramatta to distribute the music and movies.
Police executed five search warrants were executed with piracy officials and Camden police.
"Today's record seizure confirms that physical piracy remains a huge problem for the music industry,'' Dean Mitchell, investigations manager of Music Industry Piracy Investigations, said.
In June 2008, 20,000 pirated Asian DVDs and music CDs were seized from a shop in Cabramatta.
The proprietor of the shop is currently before the courts on multiple charges of piracy.
Criminal penalties for copyright infringement are up to $60,500 and five years imprisonment per offence for individuals, and up to $302,500 for corporations.
