Stranded tourist talks to Sunrise from Mumbai chaos

Nov 27 11:59am

Steve Smith, an Australian in Mumbai, India has been caught in the crossfire of the terror attacks overnight that appear to have targetted westerners.

Up to 20 American and British tourists are believed to still hostage to ther terrorists after gunmen stormed two major Mumbai hotels around 10pm local time.

The raid included a call for all guests with American and Birtish passports to stand to one side.

Steve Smith, a traveling businessman, was at first holed up in a cupboard.

"I don't have a weapon, I don't have a firearm," Steve tells Sunrise from a shop where he is heard to be hiding out with some others.

Smith explains that he witnessed the first attacks as men walked into the Taj Hotel lobby with AK-47 assault rifles as they tossed grenades.

Sunrise immediately contacted the Department of Foreign Affairs to put them in touch with Mr Smith to assist him. Watch tomorrow for updates on the situation in Mumbai.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
