Six boys, no girls. What would you do?

Nov 16 05:52pm

If you had six boys in your family and little genetic chance of havng a girl, would you seek help overseas?

That was the decision facing the couple featured on Sunrise today, Lisa and Paul.

With the practice of sex selection banned here since 2005, Lisa and Paul Jones flew to Thailand for IVF treatment trying to balance out their family. The couple were unsuccessful - read their story in our factsheets -  but they defend their decision saying they love their boys, they just desperately would like a girl.

What would you do? Is it ever ok to ‘play God’ and select the gender of a child?

They are just trying to get a balance in their own family. In their position I would do the same.

I think it is contradictory that is is illegal to not choose the gender of your future child but it's legal to kill your unborn existing child. Going by the current laws, you could continue having abortions until you get a girl

I have 4 beautiful boys, which I love dearly, but not having a daughter, I felt like something was missing, like I wasn't complete. I was recently blessed with a little girl, and OMG, I don't want for another thing as long as I live. Best wishes for a girl Linda.

I strongly disagree with ppl choosing the sex of their children. Children are a blessing and a gift we should all be grateful for, picking and choosing in the face of such honour is disrespecting life itself. Greed is a driving force for too many people today now children are becoming a commodity.

Life is all about choice whether you choose to call that choice being selfish, so be it. I love all my boys and my husbands boys dearly. I NEVER said I was not grateful for my boys they are my the world to me but I just feel as though there is a small piece of our family missing, as does my eldest!

After being told we had to have IVF we naturally had a girl at 23wks,shes survived 7wks then we lost her. Now we have since had 2 boys at 32wks that we love to bits although we still long for a little girl since ours was taken away from us. I wish gender selection was an option here in Australia.

there is a huge rise is numbers of ppl finding out the sex of the baby before 12 weeks and aborting, if it is not the desired sex. not illegal. i feel sex selection is the best option for couples. and not legal? why?

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
