Internet filter splits opinion

Nov 13 07:48am

Greg Cary - a Sunrise All-Star - has backed the government's plan to censor 'unwanted content' from the internet for Australians.

Flip Shelton, writer, says that the censorship won't work as the illegal websites will always find a way to get through.

What do you think?  Should the government try to restrict the worst parts of the internet? Tell us below...

Sunrise should discuss both sides of the arguement rather than just promoting their pro-filter view. How about a balanced discussion on the topic with people in the industry who don't necessarily think the filter is feasible or that the government has a right to decide what content is unwanted.

Exactly how is it possible to back a plan to censor 'unwanted content' when Conroy has failed to define what exactly that includes? Until we see a clear definition of exactly what will be censored it is foolish to back any such plan.

Who cares what its blocking, its how much it will slow down our already pathetic internet connections that is my concern.

Australia has slow internet, adding a filter will make it worse.

Without hyperbole, this is the singular worst thing to happen to the internet in Australia. This is a waste of money, a breach of civil liberties, and, to add insult to injury, will *not* protect children.
Why is the Government going ahead with this when everyone has told them it will fail?

Every person has the power to filter content, easy and free. Use http://www.opendns.com It has filtering built in. There is instructions on the site to help you set it up. I have been using it for about a year and have never had a problem.

Beware, all mums and dads who watch this very one sided TV program. Your right to choose what is 'unwanted" is being removed, but not by you.

Can sunrise please do a bit of research before discussing this topic again?
Please stop being that loud voice of the ill-informed.
Throwing your hands in the air Ned Flanders style and screaming "what about the children" is a joke.
This plan WILL NOT WORK, anyone with a clue knows this!

Sunrise, you have an opportunity to take the lead and expose the governments lack of knowledge and willing to mislead (and pander to) the general public while ignoring all expert advice.
