Farewell Fuelwatch as prices come down

Nov 13 07:41am

Joe Dimasi, the federal government's Petrol Commissioner has vowed to work hard to ensure transparency and fairness after Fuelwatch was rejected by the senate.

Independent Nick Xenophon sided with the opposition to vote the plan down which would have enabled drivers to lcate the cheapest petrol in their area.

"My job is to make sure we have the most competitive petrol market we can - and bring some certainty to petrol prices," he told Sunrise.

The commissioner says he's not surprised there is "a great deal of conclusion and uncertainty."

"We import petrol fro Singapore, so that sets the price in Australia "

"Fortunately, it's been coming down."

Sunrise host Natalie Barr questioned the commissioner on why the petrol companies continue to pull in massive multi-billion-dollar profits.

"As for the massive profits," says Dimasi, "It's quite a mixed picture... These things fluctuate."

"The price of Singapore petrol is selling below the price of relevant crude."

And the good news for motorists is they are trending down.

"Since the peak in mid July prices have come down around thirty-five cents."

"They would have come down another twenty cents if it weren't for the exchange rate."

"The price of petrol will continue to fall."

Living in WA, Fuelwatch seems to work well. It does give you an idea of current fuel prices and where to shop. The only thing is when you are living out of Perth and still paying around $1.46 when Perth is at the moment paying from $1.19 and being told that ‘You made the decision to live in the c

....cont..‘You made the decision to live in the country you should expect to pay more!!’ really gets my goat.

If Joe Dimasi, the federal government’s Petrol Commissioner can’t control the prices, can he control or make decisions on reducing the fuel taxes we pay to compensate??

I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
