My bf is a pom and has been here for a year. He's still amused by how we shorten our words eg. brekkie, bottle-o, etc.He loves using these when talking with his mum. He'll say "on the way to the servo to get some brekkie we passed some ambos and firies". She has no idea what he's saying.

I have just eturned from USA after a holiday in Hawaii and mainland America , one guy I greeted with "Gooday Mate" he thought I said "Your Gay Mate" and took immediate offence . Most Americans thought we were Pom's after listening to our accent - we can't lose any part of our it !!

I was talking to my cousins in Canada recently who are so fascinated by our accent and language, that one of them tried to casually slot into conversation what they THOUGHT was a great and common pairing of two popular Aussie terms: "Cya, bloody mate!"
Haha!

All of them. I came to Australia in 1960 & am a fair dinkum Aussie now. This is my home. So when I hear "cool, so fun, funnest, go figure, etc, I cringe. We are not American & hopefully never will be. We Are/were unique. There's a great site at www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slan g.html. It's magic.

Mr Dictionary - Dr. Bruce Moore. Is there such a word as "ENGLISHS" - or "ENGLISHES"????????? Do we have "Italians" or "Greeks"????? I teach English. There are variation of this i am sure, but i wouldn't say I am teaching "Englishs". Listening to him repeat this was painful to my ears!!!!

Isn't it a sign of insecurity when the aussie media have to keep bringing up time and time again whats aussie? All overseas celebrities that u see on tv are asked,Would u like to live in aussie,or how do u like our great country?we are who we are end of story. Why make something out of nothing.

We are loosing our language identity because of several things. The media uses American terminolgy all the time! Very annoying even Natalie eats "cookies". All overseas products should be made to change to Australian. Also the voices on toys should be an Australian accent

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
