How to save money running your car

Oct 14 12:03am

Feel like putting your foot down over accelerating car costs?

We have few ways you can get more for your mile as fuel prices keep rising ...

NRMA's Coral Taylor, who is a rally car driver, says following simple tips can save you huge money at the bowser.

  • Coral says pumped up tyres, switching off air-conditioning and taking your golf clubs out of the boot can help your car become more efficient.
  • She says pumped up tyres are crucial because the drag on the road can ruin tyres and slow your car down, making it work harder.
  • Jon Dee from Planet Ark says we can save huge amounts of money using alternative transport measures.
  • He says the ordinary Australian will save up to $13,000 not driving to work.
  • Jon says car-pooling is another useful way of cutting costs, cutting emissions and making travel to work faster. He says you can save up to $125 a week car-pooling, and this is usually organised through work.
  • Jon says a cheaper way of travel will be purchasing a bike or simply walking to work, if its nearby.

This all well & good but what happens when u live in a place, such as Geelong an hour from Melbourne where public transport is [profane]? I used to live 15 minutes out of geelong city centre 15minutes away from beach. Yet it took 3 bus rides and over 2 hours to get to the beach if I didnt have a car?

We have created a Dynamic carpooling site called The Daily Commute which can be viewed at www.thedailycommute.com.au . We believe we have sorted the issue around safety. The site is very user friendly and can be used in conjunction with your mobile phone

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
