Sep 16 07:10am

As with all life-threatening seizures, swift action is essential so correct diagnosis is paramount.

A stroke occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen - it is not a heart attack.

This year 60,000 strokes will occur in Australia - that's a stroke every 10 minutes - which means Stroke is Australia 's second biggest killer and a leading cause of disability.

The National Stroke Foundation has developed an acronym to remember the signs of stroke:

  •  F - Facial Weakness
  •  A - Arm weakness
  •  S - Speech Difficulties
  •  T - Time To Act

Please share this acronym with your children and friends to increase awareness of tihs debilitating concern.

My mother had a stroke on 31/07/07 and was taken by ambulance to Blacktown Hospital, we arrived at the hospital at 7.40am and my mum didn't have a CT scan untill 1pm then was not seen by a neuroligist till 5pm. Maybe someone should inform the the hospital that every second counts.

I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
