Would you intervene to stop a crime?

Sep 03 07:40am

A UK study has found so-called 'have-a-go heroes' are becoming rare. 60% of people surveyed would stand by while a group of 14-year-olds vandalised a bus shelter. The study found anti-social behaviour was seen as a matter for the police not the community.

Is this the same in Australia? Should ordinary people step in to stop minor crimes?

I am what is known as Cop caller and that doesnt mean I am afraid of facing the crims mid act as I am not I will go out and confront any of them I feel society needs to let these delinquents and other hoods know that we wont stand for it any more. Otherwise we might as well packup and move out bush

If hubbie sees unfamiliar face/faces walking down street he'll go to car and then give them the evil eye stare, what are you doing in our street, white vans that park too long in street, ring police. I drive alone in car, hubbie has put a cheeta bar side of seat for me, and I'm not afraid to use it

Even as a former Police officer I would be reluctant to assist due to the rediculous letigious society we have turned into. How can the purpitrator of a crime turn around and sue someone for trying to stop them. If government wants more community involvment they need to remove the right to sue.

My hubby & I helped the police apprehend a shoplifter. We saw the police giving chase on foot & the thief was fast, so we drove our car in front of the thief & cut off his escape route & the police caught him. The police thanked us but let us know it was a risk.

Before anyone calls Crime Stoppers, consider the consequences. Do you really want to be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life.

Silence is golden.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
