Poms gloat over medal tally

Aug 26 11:05am

Gloating has been taken to new heights with English newspaper The Sun going to the time and expense to produce what UK correspondent Nuala Hafner has described as 'mobile gloating units'. They've even shipped one to Australia!

The trucks' giant posters compare our medal tally to theirs and throw our controversial tourism campaign right back at us.

It's caused an uproar in the Soapbox. Here are some of your comments:

Sandra did some quick research:
For every Olympics since Seoul (1988) (including Seoul to Beijing (inclusive also), the
Gold Medal Tally stands:    Australia: 69      Great Britain: 42.
Where the Bloody Hell have the poms been for the last 20 year? Let's take out a billboard poster for that one!

From Shirley, a joke:

How many Brits does it takefor them  to win at the
Olympics...

NON, just Australian coaches!

I think it's a compliment that the Brits compare themselves with us as a measure for success in sports! Andrea

How many Golds were won by Scots or Welsh? They are seperate identities in Commonwealth Games but become 'Great' Britain for the Olympics. Gil

Kotchie & Beretts you use the word 'gloat' when the Brits celebrate their Olympic medal wins, but describe the Aussie wins as 'sensational'. Come on guys show a bit of praise for the Poms, deep down you know they're brilliant. Don't let your inferior complexes get in the way of good & fair judgement

You are forgetting one thing here. Great Britain includes the total medal count of 4 countries. Australia is just 1 country. If the poms want to REALLY count medals then show us the figures for ENGLAND. :)
19. gsmith19772000 - Aug 27 06:43am
Maybe we should include the medal count for Australia, New Zealand and Asia just to keep things fair. That would put the Austrasian Gold Medal count to 97. Put that on a billboard you Great Brittish cheats.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
