It's been three weeks since Dennis Ferguson was released from jail.
But he's hardly been a free man.
As upset Queensland residents have watched his every move it's clear no-one wants the notorious paedophile in their backyard.
The Government hasn't been able to find a solution to the problem. Now the councillor for the area where Ferguson is currently staying has come up with an idea. He wants sex offenders sent to a remote island for their own protection.
Logan City Councillor Darren Power tells Sunrise
he would like a small island "somewhere up north" to be selected for
the purpose of housing criminals like Ferguson.
It would need to be "something easy to access" says Power and something that could "facilitate many more people like Ferguson later on."
While Power acknowledges Ferguson is techincally a "free man" and therefore could not be forced to live on an island, Power says he believes Ferguson must be looking for some sort of self imposed exile.
"He needs to find somewhere safe and we need to find somewhere safe for us. Given those two factors, he is looking for an answer because at the moment, it's cost us around about $ $250,000 for the three weeks."
"That's just not a good option."
We need an option and it needs to be fairly secluded."
"If you suggest this is an option for other paedophiles, not just for Dennis Ferguson, critics could say once an offender has served their time, they should be able to live wherever they want to live."
Power avoided the question of whether multiple paedophiles like Ferguson would want to co-exist on an island, saying with some desperation, "We have to find somewhere because these are free men but they can't fit into mainstream society. There is no place for them."
