Hole in internet plugged

Jul 10 09:29am
A flaw that’s been uncovered on the internet could have allowed hackers to duplicated any website and tricking users into giving over vital information

For example, someone could log onto the NAB site, but a  hacker re-routes you to a duplicate or “trojan" site.

How it works

It looks the same as your NAB site, and asks you for all the same information as your regular site does, but once you enter all that information in the hacker then has the ability to start transferring funds from your account into theirs.

New viruses that affect your personal computer appear everyday, but this vulnerability could have effected all computers that use the World Wide Web.

Hackers scan the internet looking for unprotected individuals. They can’t usually penetrate corporations, but they can penetrate individual computers that don’t have the adequate protection

How to protect yourself

The only way this can be stopped is to make sure you have adequate protection on your computer.. that is firewall and virus software protection

How virus protection software works

All software applications have a code, like a fingerprint.

When you click on a compromised or ‘hacked’ website, the application that re-routes you to a duplicate site also has a particular fingerprint. The anti-virus protection looks for that fingerprint in an enormous list of suspect applications, and once identified, kills it.

Our Gadget Guy, Pete Blasina says the only way to stay safe on the internet is to get protected.

Grief! DNS Hijacking and DNS Poisoning are NOT new! These are techniques that are DECADES old! Hocking some specific products to "fix" a problem that has existed is dangerous in that it trivializes Information Security to one placebo. Using a Mac or using Linux doesn’t save you from this because the

Utter rubbish.
This is not an intrusive attack on your PC so antivirus and firewalls cannot be effective.

There will ALWAYS be new software that'll open NEW BACK DOORS that exsiting software weren't programmed to stop. Unfortunately, criminals are looking for and finding them OPEN DOORS faster than anyone worrying about finding and CLOSING them.

To stop it businesses NEED to make sure the DATE is added to every article posted on their site. Then users could verify the dates are current before using the site. Copied sites are more likely to be out-of -date. At least it'll force them to keep updating their site and that might expose them.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
