Skate or die, say Sunrise viewers

Today’s story on Melbourne’s skateboarders facing fines brought a swift response in our soapbox – mostly from defenders of the board. Here’s a sample…Text: Skate boards are good physical exercise i dont even ride one never have but they have to be better than smoking or taking drugs give the kids a break Soapbox comment: Skateboards and bikes seem to have no restrictions on footpaths and pedestrian crossings in our area  No helmets are also a common sight.  Recently I was driving through a town in this area when out of nowhere came this school child on a bike straight across the pedestrian crossing at speed.  As I was taking care I was able to stop but it could have been different, the kid could be in hospital and I could be in court.

Text: to prevent accidents There's no wonder kids turn to vandalism. He needs to remember what he was like as a kid. Soapbox comment: Fining skateboarders is ridiculous, We have an obesity epidemic, people complain about kids being inside on computers or playstations, they cant go out into the street because thats not safe either. What are these kids supposed to do they are doing what everyone has been preaching to them for years, get out, play, keep fit.

Soapbox comment: Are you gonna take away our child hood? and our teen years. sounds like the nazi party or something. i've been skating for a few years i never seen an elderly person get knocked over they just yell at us for no reason... i seriously think all old people are nazi's now, like they have had there time why not let us in our time have some fun why do the elderly have to ruin everything for young people.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
