Give your friendly servo a plug!

Jul 09 12:59am

After years of the big oil companies shovelling enormous profits overseas and swallowing independent operators, the little servos are fighting back.

And we're here to help.

Soapbox message from Neil

I have an answer on petrol prices. Floated it last week and it is taking off. I am asking independent stations to cut their price by ten cents a litre for one hour – a happy hour. They are getting sponsorship from local businesses and we help promote it. Everybody is happy: motorists get cheap fuel, service stations get repeat business and local chops get great promotion for a small amount. We have had several in Melbourne, one in Deneliquin, Warnambool and now others promised for Melbourne later this week. Seems to be working...

So tell your local independent servo to start their own happy hour - and while you're at it,

Give your favourite servo a plug below, telling us what you love about them....

I can never find cheaper petrol prices in Sydney then what I see them on fuelwatch.wa.gov.au.

And fuel should be cheaper in Sydney then in WA.

When will we have fuelwatch in Sydney??

This is a really bad idea. People are not going to rush to buy fuel in this one hour of the day.

The result is that petrol stations will be charging 10 cents less to people who would have gone their regardless.

Happy hour would only be during a quiet period and only if consumer volume increased.

How can you possibly narrow down your search to a favourite servo? These 4c vouchers off petrol from woolworths is a load of **** we end up spending that extra few dollars to get them sometimes and then when go fill the tank with $50 we get around $1 off. My solution simple convert to gas!

I think its a cheek to as for a favourite servo, if you can find one in WA where deisel is selling for $1.97 (BP) all servo's are out to rip the public off with big oil companies behind them, take the GST off and maybe we will have happier servo's, 4c off from big s/markets total rip off

There's a good little servo/fruit stall at Murwillumbah (forgot name) they are always 3c cheaper than your big servo's and they sell local good fruit n veg's. But travel 20 minutes to Tweed Heads/Banora Point you'll get fuel up to 10c cheaper. Face it consumers get ripped off all the time.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
