Can Only Men Be Exhibitionists?

Jan 11 04:11am

The American Psychiatric Association defines exhibitionism as "recurrent intense sexually-arousing fantasies, sexual urges or behaviors involving the exposure of one's genitals to unsuspecting strangers." In some cases, the motivation is to arouse shock, surprise, or even elicit sexual feelings in the observer(s).

In American society there are many more venues for women to expose their bodies, including their genitals to some degree, from skin-revealing casual dresses, to bikini-clad models to the get-ups of exotic dancers and show business personalities. Yet penalties or censure are almost non-existent for such behavior. Not many people consider this behavior sexually deviant or perverted.

A recent example of this double standard regarding genital exposure was the infamous "flashing" incident involving the singer Britney Spears, who was photographed getting out of the back seat of a limousine wearing a very short skirt and no underwear. Although the exposure was brief, nothing was left to the imagination, and it was recorded indelibly for posterity by the many paparazzi in close attendance.

Many commentators noted that this was probably a premeditated act to attract attention to herself, but no one suggested that Spears derived sexual gratification from the activity. And no one suggested that the police or any other authorities be contacted, which would almost certainly have been the case if a man were involved.

It is unlikely that anyone will accuse Spears of harboring a perversion, although shock, surprise, and sexual arousal were all distinctly possible responses for the observers involved. We are then left with a conundrum: Is it true that women in our society are free to expose their bodies with relatively little chance of censure, while for men such behavior is viewed as illegal and an indication of significant sexual deviance? What do you think?

Here in the Philippines, usually it's scandalous for women to be like that.Men in this country usually don't have clothes but for women it's scandalous. Maybe because this country is religous.Women here in province usually a shy type.If a man is a stranger they don't talk and ignore them because if they do flirt and anyone see them, after that usually happen is everyone think shes not a clean women.

Great point, Dr!! What is interesting to me is that most true exhibitionists are harmless and don't ever go any further than exhibiting for their own pleasure (and to shock... which also gets them aroused)... the men, that is! Women exhibitionists on the other hand, are most always doing it to arouse others... they go into a state of lordus and their PEA, vaspressine and other hormones/chems go up and they want to take it further. So it is quite topsy-turvy that women exhibitionists are more acceptable in our society... when they probably are more apt to go further.

#17... dadan_fe_ygie... I feel sorry that a woman is thought to be unclean if she flirts with men in some countries. In the USA we probably go too far sometimes and we "expect" our men to act like gentlemen no matter what we do (of course, not all of them are)... and that is probably not fair to them.

Is exhibionist about how much flesh is exposed or about the intention of the person with flesh exposed?

I'm of the belief that when it comes to the idea of women showing their genitals as oppose to men showing theirs....yeah society does not get all bent out of shape but, just let a guy's johnson dangle out of his shorts just a little bit; just a little bit of the head exposed and all the world goes crazy and that guy is branded a nasty pervert forever.

kennethbrown, well obviously you are not an old hippie dude. They all wore cutoffs and no underware. I don't remember anyone freaking out! Male exhibitions are usually masturbating or handling and pointing their equipment when people are freaking out. You sound like a male version of palmtreeblue.

Most of us have some Exhibitionist in us. Quiet frankly I have a lot in me. I love to be Naked in areas with clothed people who accepting of my male nudity. I feel so humiliated when my wife invites her friends over and she lets them know in advance that I never wear clothing at home. So, I commend Britney and I hope someday that all of us can be Naked in public and it not be thought of as a sexual happening.
