Can Only Men Be Exhibitionists?

Jan 11 04:11am

The American Psychiatric Association defines exhibitionism as "recurrent intense sexually-arousing fantasies, sexual urges or behaviors involving the exposure of one's genitals to unsuspecting strangers." In some cases, the motivation is to arouse shock, surprise, or even elicit sexual feelings in the observer(s).

In American society there are many more venues for women to expose their bodies, including their genitals to some degree, from skin-revealing casual dresses, to bikini-clad models to the get-ups of exotic dancers and show business personalities. Yet penalties or censure are almost non-existent for such behavior. Not many people consider this behavior sexually deviant or perverted.

A recent example of this double standard regarding genital exposure was the infamous "flashing" incident involving the singer Britney Spears, who was photographed getting out of the back seat of a limousine wearing a very short skirt and no underwear. Although the exposure was brief, nothing was left to the imagination, and it was recorded indelibly for posterity by the many paparazzi in close attendance.

Many commentators noted that this was probably a premeditated act to attract attention to herself, but no one suggested that Spears derived sexual gratification from the activity. And no one suggested that the police or any other authorities be contacted, which would almost certainly have been the case if a man were involved.

It is unlikely that anyone will accuse Spears of harboring a perversion, although shock, surprise, and sexual arousal were all distinctly possible responses for the observers involved. We are then left with a conundrum: Is it true that women in our society are free to expose their bodies with relatively little chance of censure, while for men such behavior is viewed as illegal and an indication of significant sexual deviance? What do you think?

ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT THERE ARE LOTS AND LOTS OF FEMALE EXHIBITIONISTS IN OUR AMERICAN SOCIETY! Most (or all) of them pretend to claim to dress sexy or pretty. They are nothing but sickos. If there is any equality in our society there will come a day when these women are arrested. I say touche'. When they stand before me looking sexy I look directly at their "sex". This causes them to become conscious of how uncomfortable they are making me and they attempt to cover up. Sometimes I even boldly say out loud to them exactly what it is that I see, which is nothing less than what they are putting on for public display and view. I hope to raise their consciousness and I do think that sometimes I succeed. How else would they know what fools they are making of us and of themself? It seems everyone else is "pretending" they don't notice (that is what they actually tell me). Those sexy women are sexually harassing ME just the same as they are sexually harassing men when they dress in such a way that we all have to pretend we don't see. This is MY life and I don't and won't pretend or ignore anything. This is the one life I have and I will not be ignorant nor mindless of anything. If you are showing, I am looking and if you don't like it than cover up, for Godsake, and be a grown up!

www.ifeelmyself.com attributes the video contributions of masturbatory orgasm by ordinary women to three things, one of them exhibitionism; however, the behavior displayed may not, strictly speaking, be labeled a perversion because the strangers viewing it are not unsuspecting. I believe that the various available outlets for women coupled with a level of aggression that does not cross over to "inflicting" the viewing of full nudity on a stranger makes women's exhibitionism unique. It could be argued that men's behavior would match women's if the available outlets were the same, but I believe that aggressive exhibitionist men would still impose full nudity on unsuspecting strangers, although perhaps a smaller number.

Spears is a pervert and too talentless to carry a tune if a gun was pointed to her head. I'm more woman and more sexy than that splattered bird dropping could ever hope to be. She doesn't have enough sense to model what class is to anyone her age group. She's pathetic.

However, to show the other side of the coin - how many men do we see in full frontal nudity outside the porn industry? In regular movies, not many and if so the take is spilt seconds, LOL. Double standard or are men still so afraid of "measuring up"? Get real, not all women who bare it all are equal top or bottom !!

Regarding the tolerance of naked woman in our american society.
I believethis demonstrates the control men still have over the media. And that is, that although they show pictures of naked or semi-naked women they get away with it by saying, as they look. "See here how terrible this is." And those words make it ok. .Add that to the 'poor defensless woman syndrome.' and voila- women can appear as they want.
Now when the male comes along we pull out the puritan philosophy that has somehow lead us to the believe that something is wrong with the body that God gave us and we must keep it hidden or terrible things will happen because of it.

If we allowed both sexes to dress as they want then we all would eventually become tired of seeing a naked body and oogle no longer.
Start by going to a nude beach. Believe me, after a couple hours you would be able to keep your mind and eyes on your book with no problem. We are, by human nature, always trying to see what we are not supposed to see. It is the love of mystery that keeps up the interest.

I agree. As a massage therapist and a lady who spends alot of time at the gym, I am very comfortable with nudity. However , I have never known a woman who got sexual thrills by exposing her naked body to people who didn't get a thrill from looking at it. Male exhibionists are scary because they do it in a manner that makes the unintentional veiwer fell unsafe and threatened. As a person who is not offended by nudity, I still feel violated by an exhibionist. I do not consider dress that is still legal, to be in the same catagory as a man who is flashing women and children, who become frightened and feel threatened.

WOM - you are without a doubt right in #9. Exhibitionist who are doing so in order to shock someone or worse give themselves a thrill by doing so to a child are the dregs of society.

Miss Spears is in the entertainment industry. What she wears or doesn't wear is a source of entertainment for many. Her breif exposure without underware was witnessed by those who had cameras focused on her. Those who have looked at those photos chose to do so. Those who took those photos got paid to do so. Male exhibitionists { of the criminal variety} expose themselves to children who are at the playground or walking to school or women in parking lots at grocery stores. I see a big difference between Miss Spears and perverts in bushes at playgrounds.

#11: I don't see a big difference between Brittany Spears and the perverts in bushes at playgrounds. It doesn't matter who your audience is. What makes you think an adult loves seeing someone's scaly, pasty, body being exposed to them just because they're an adult? Not everyone walking the streets looks good. Some people add more clothes. The only one I care to see exposed is my husband. I don't want to be flashed by some freak because I'm an adult and can handle it. I don't want to be repulsed by some sagging, wrinkled old fart at some point in my life anymore than I care to see some fat oaf walking around with a midriff on. Why do I have to be subjected to viewing someone else's spare tire? Where's the common decency any more? I cover up if I don't look good. Others should do the same.
