Question
We have a four-month-old King Charles Cavalier cross Poodle. From the day we got him he has always been shy, perhaps even hesitant, but I am now concerned as when walking him he always rolls on his back when meeting a dog or a person. He has always done this at home but I thought he just wanted a pat on the tummy. Is this a sign of submissive behaviour? Is it detrimental in any way? How do I make him feel more confident?

By rolling on his back your dog is saying “I want to be your friend”. It is submissive behaviour but it is not detrimental and has nothing to do with confidence. There is no need to worry, this is normal dog behaviour.
