Dr Rachele Lowe - Pint-Sized Pups

Nov 28 12:30pm

Little dogs are the latest celeb accessory, but they can make great pets too, says Sunrise vet Dr Rachele Lowe.

Usually standing at less than 20cm and weighing no more than 3kg on average, tiny dogs (most often Yorkshire terriers and chihuahuas) are small in stature, but their popularity is sky high! Whether it's because they're a popular 'accessory' with celebs or due to a general trend towards small pets, people can't get enough of them! Paris Hilton loves little breeds - her dogs include Cinderella the Yorkie and chihuahuas Bambi and Tinkerbell - and Britney Spears is also a fan with chihuahua Bit Bit and Yorkie London. Registrations in the US in 2006 showed the Yorkie was the second most popular dog, behind the labrador retriever.

Tiny but mighty
The Yorkshire terrier is a long-haired breed that has a distinctive black and tan coloured coat. It's a highly intelligent breed - ranked 27th out of all dogs. The chihuahua is not as bright as the Yorkie, coming in at 67th. They can have a short and smooth or soft and long coat.

Little dogs for little ones
Both Yorkshire terriers and chihuahuas have a lot of guts for their size - and will have a go at other dogs if they feel threatened. This sometimes gets them into trouble because they can be easily injured. It's also the reason I think they're not ideal pets for small children.

Doggy Development

Yorkshire terriers

Yorkies are active, agile and courageous little dogs. The key with the breed is to make sure they're well socialised and not overindulged.
Very pampered Yorkshire terriers can lack the true terrier confidence and be clingy and demanding. Yorkies that are well bred and well handled by their owners will have great self-confidence and a well-developed social personality.

Chihuahuas

Officially the smallest breed of dog in the world, chihuahuas were first discovered in the state of Chihuahua in Mexico in 1850.
Chihuahuas are prized for their tiny size - those that compete in shows should not exceed a weight of 2.7kg.
A devoted, lively, curious breed, the chihuahua is a small dog that has a big personality. They develop a strong bond with their owner and can be jealous of his/her human relationships.
They're clannish dogs that prefer the company of chihuahuas as opposed to other dog breeds.
They sometimes have a reputation for being snappy and highly strung, but the secret here - surprise, surprise! - is socialisation. Chihuahuas that are well socialised are even-tempered, self-confident and loads of fun.

Did you know
The smallest dog ever recorded in history is a Yorkie that was only 6.3cm tall at the shoulder. The current reigning smallest dog by height is Duckie, a chihuahua standing at 12.3cm. A Yorkie called Big Boss, measuring only 11.9cm in height, was in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1995-2002.

Oh...Forgot to add...Anyone that gets a pet just to add as an accessory in their life is so soon to get fed up with it and this is definitly a no no in my eyes.
A pet has feelings and should not be an accessory but loved and treasured as a living thing

I was given Foxy by my Daughters 2 years ago. While I never saw myself as having a small dog, I would never part with her know. I have suffered from epilepsy and this little dog is my greatest protector. Has raised the attention of neighbors after having a seizure.

Little dogs only yap if left to do so when still pups. I have small dogs whose breed have a reputation for yapping, but from day one i taught them not to. Yet they are good watchdogs.

I have 3 chihuahua's all long haired all but 1 are very even tempered and sweet. The one that isn't is only that way because he was an only child for some time and very spoilt (my bad). Mini dogs aren't just an accessory - they are extremely adorable! And I do agree with people, noone should get a dog as an accessory - they do need walks even though they're small, and they still need to be trained and unless they mean more to you than your Manolo Blahniks then unfortunately they'll become like l

cont.. last season's of low waisted jeans and forgotten about! Paris's pups aren't accessories either - she takes very good care of them and loves them alot. My mum takes her dogs everywhere she goes, and even gets outside tables at restaurants just so they can sit with her, but she's the last person to care about what's cool or not - she just doesn't want the girls to be alone at hm.. so don't be so quick to judge!

If they are so affordable, cute and small why do these type of dogs including maltese end up in the pounds, on any given day its the small dogs that are the larger percentage of the dumped pets. They are noisy, nervous, flighty, predisposed to bite even their owners and have no idea how to be a real dog, thats why

As Holloberg says stick with the staffy's

Minature Schnauzers are the best dogs!
Apart from being well behaved and like a member of the family, they dont shed hair and dont have a doggie smell...
