Hairstyles That Suit You

Your face shape goes a long way to determining what kind of haircut will work best for you. Follow our guidelines and you'll be sure to get it right every time.

A heart-shaped face is narrow at jaw line, wide at cheekbones/and or forehead (think Reese Witherspoon). The best styles for heart-shapes are chin-length or longer with side-parts working particularly well. Swept-forward layers around the upper face and a wispy fringe also look great. A chin length bob is a good style but avoid short, full styles that emphasise upper face and slicked-back styles.

If you have an oval face shape (length equal to one and a half times width) like Jennifer Aniston you're very lucky because you can get away with almost anything. Oval-shapes look best when the hair is kept back off the face and should avoid heavy fringes and brushed-forward layers. Other celebs with this shape include Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz.

Short to medium lengths work best for people with rectangular-shaped faces like Gwyneth Paltrow. Rectangular faces are longer than they are wide and may have a narrow chin and/or wide forehead. Soft, wispy fringes work well as does fullness at the sides of the face. You should avoid too much length.

If you have a full-looking face with a round chin and hairline then you probably have a round face-shape like Drew Barrymore. Go for styles with fullness and height at the crown. Short hair styles with a swept-back direction or hair styles that are longer than chin length are your best bets. You should avoid any chin-length styles as they emphasise the round-shape.

A square-shaped face is as wide as it is long. Short-to-medium length hair, especially with wave or roundness around the face suits people with this shape, like Sandra Bullock, the best. Layers work very well because they soften the angular shape but you should avoid long straight styles that accentuate square jawbone and straight fringes.

That's so true, every hair dresser that I went to, whenever they ask me what I want, I ask them what they think suits me because they are the pros when it comes to hair. And I've been to a handful of hairdressers who recommended the same style of hair cut every time, and its fits the description here too!

Why on earth don' you use examples of much older people say in their 60's and upwards. They too are often confused or stuck in a rut. However it's hard fro them to imagaine a style on their face when looking at a twenty or thirty year old. Just for the record i am not yet forty.
