Turn the TV off! Studies have found that the health benefits of a family dinner are lost if the TV stays on.

Aim to get the whole family to sit down together for at least one meal, as a number of studies have shown, a family meal may have some surprising health benefits.

Eating together is a good way to strengthen bonds. Time spent in each other’s company helps develop communication skills as each family member shares their daily events and plans.

Sharing family meals has been found to help kids get better marks at school. It also improves their motivation and helps them learn how to socialise.

Families who sit down to regular meals together also benefit nutritionally. They tend to eat healthier foods, such as more fruits and vegetables, and a lot less fatty takeaway meals and fizzy drinks than those who sit down to dinner in front of the television.

As well as eating the right foods, having a meal together can also set the foundation for learning about portion control. Knowing about meal sizes can help family members keep  their weight in check.
