New evidence shows that eating high satiety foods - ones that make you feel fuller for longer - will lead to weight loss.
'Studies reported in Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that protein-rich foods such as eggs make you feel fuller for longer, which means you will consume less kilojoules, ' Sharon Natoli, dietitian and consultant to the Egg Corporation, says.
'Other star performers are fish, beef, vegies, potatoes, baked beans and wholegrains. '
Stop the craving
Sometimes feeling full for longer is about fooling your eyes and tricking your tummy. Try these tips to stop cravings.
- Put food on a smaller plate so it looks like you're eating more.
- Pack away leftovers at the same time you serve dinner so you'll be less tempted to nibble on them later.
- Serve yourself less than you normally would and wait until after you've eaten to see if you need that extra helping.
- We tend to eat more of foods when we can see them, so keep snack items in the cupboard or in containers you can't see through.
- Put your knife and fork down after each mouthful and take time to savour the taste of the food.
- Make meals last for 20 minutes. Slow down and chew well.
- Don't eat dessert until half an hour after dinner so your stomach registers what you've already eaten.
- Don't give in to temptation and upsize meals. Save your money - and kilojoules.
- Pre-portioned packaged food such as noodles, rice and chips can help control how much you eat.
Star diet performers
Celebs are fans of high satiety foods. Charlize Theron loves eggs, which have been found to make you feel fuller for longer when eaten at breakfast, compared to an alternative of equal kilojoules. 'I love red meat, so have steak and eggs for breakfast, ' she says. Reese Witherspoon also loves high satiety foods - roast chicken and butter-free mash is a favourite.
