Look 10 years younger in 10 steps

Stop hiding behind your hair and piling on make-up to
cover your age.  There are easier ways to turn back
time to make your skin and hair look younger.

1.  Apply white eye make-up
A hint of white on your eyes may be all you need to look youthful. The quickest way to achieve this is to draw a line with a white eyeliner along the inner rim of your lower eyelid. This will brighten up the eye area and give you an instant lift. Try M.A.C Eye Kohl in Fascinating, $32. Follow with an even application of eye shadow over the eyelids in a bone shade with a hint of shimmer such as Avon Glazewear Diamonds Eye Colour, $8.99.

Look for shadows that are crease-resistant, slide on easily, have light-reflecting properties and stay put for hours. If you prefer a matte finish rather than a shimmer, opt
for Rimmel London Colour Rush Mono Eye Shadow in Matte White 241, $9.95. Lastly, finish with a sweep of smudge-proof mascara that doesn’t clump. We love Maybelline NY XXL Volume+Length Microfiber Mascara in Very Black, $19.95, which gives outrageous fullness and length to lashes.

2.  Use anti-wrinkle eye cream
As we age, the skin under our eyes becomes thinner and dark circles appear. Take extra care when removing make-up from this area because it’s extremely sensitive – if stretched, it can make you look wrinklier and older. Always start by using an eye make-up remover that hydrates your skin as you wipe away your make-up – try L’Oréal Paris Dermo-Expertise De-Maq’ Expert Cashmere Milk Complete Make-up Remover, $14.95. Dry your eyes by gently patting with a towel and finish off with a dab of anti-ageing eye cream to firm and plump the fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes. Our favourites are Nivea Visage Anti-Wrinkle Q10 Plus Eye Cream, $18.98, and L’Oréal Paris Dermo Expertise Revitalift Eye Cream, $28.95.

3.  Look after your neck and decolletage
It’s essential to cleanse, moisturise and protect your neck and decolletage, because they’re the first areas to show signs of ageing. The key is to smooth on cream from your chest upwards, encouraging the skin to lift. PRAI Ageless Throat & Decolletage Creme, $69.50, restores and protects the delicate skin in these areas, diminishing and slowing down the signs of ageing.

4.  Care for your hands
As you mature, your hands need extra attention. Look for creams that have a sunscreen to prevent sunspots. Once a week, pamper hands with Manicare Spa Therapy Revitalising Hand Polish, $14.99. Towel dry, then massage in Manicare Spa Therapy Rejuvenating Hand Masque, $14.99, enriched with vitamins to rehydrate and condition. Rinse, then apply hand cream. Finish by painting nails with Creative Nail Design in Retro White No. 442, $16.95.

5.  Treat your dry tresses
Condition your hair to prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. Give yourself a weekly treatment, such as Wella System Professional Luminous Mask, $30, which helps to smooth cuticles and leaves you with healthy, glossy hair. Use shampoo and conditioner that strengthens and moisturises as well as nourishes the scalp without stripping your hair of natural oils. Avoid split ends and frizz by having your hair cut every six to eight weeks.

6.  Hydrate your body
There’s little you can do to prevent your skin from ageing but by exfoliating and moisturising every day, dead cells are removed revealing new, fresh cells and smooth, supple, radiant skin. We love St Tropez Body Polisher, $14.95 (120ml). Use a moisturiser with ingredients that hydrate and tone. Try Dr. Lewinn’s Private Formula ToneUp Body Moisturiser, $39.95.

7.  Nourish your face
Your skin heals quicker overnight, so before you catch up on your beauty sleep, layer on Natio Ageless Firming Night Cream, $19.95. Enriched with nourishing evening primrose oil, sweet almond oil and shea butter, this night cream fights the visible signs of ageing. During the day when skin is exposed to environmental elements, opt for an ultra-rich formula that plumps skin and reduces wrinkles and sagging skin. We love Olay Regenerist Revitalising Cream, $29.95.

8.  Use an exfoliating cleanser
For a glowing complexion, look fr a cleanser that exfoliates as you wash your face. We love Jan Marini Skin Research Bioglycolic Facial Cleanser, $55. It contains sorbitol and glycolic acid – a natural ingredient that resurfaces the skin and traps moisture, leaving your skin smooth, plump and nourished. For acne prone skin that needs a more intense exfoliation, try DermaNew Microdermabrasion, $99.95. This at-home facial kit fights the effects of ageing, sun damage and skin discolouration plus reduces the size of pores in just two minutes.

9.  Thicken your eyebrows
Groomed eyebrows can take years off your look in an instant. The thicker the brows, the younger you look. Make an appointment with an eyebrow expert to learn the colour and shape of eyebrows that suit your facial features. In between visits, maintain your brows at home with an easy-to-use eyebrow shaping kit such as Benefit Brow Zings, $53.

10.  Whiten your teeth
Over time, teeth become discoloured and aged, especially if you drink coffee or red wine or if you smoke cigarettes. A gleaming smile of white teeth can make you look healthier and younger. There are different ways to whiten teeth, from at-home treatments to visits to your dentist. You can also buy toothpastes and mouthwashes that help your pearly whites sparkle.
