Fab fashion blog - High waisted wonders

I admit, I was loving the whole high-waist thing... right up until lunch that is!

I had a small salad and fritatta for lunch and I swear I may as well have eaten a McDonald's "supersize-me" meal given the way the waist band on my skirt feels right now. Worse still, I can't let it out as, with a high-waist, you have to tuck your shirt in otherwise, what would be the point.

That's the trouble with following fashion it can make you come undone - literally. But even though I'm suffering for my art I have to confess, I do love the way the high waist looks.

And yes, I do realise I spoke to you just last week about how to hide your waist, but what you have to remember is this blog is for everyone - all shapes and sizes - so I have to cover all bases (or waist sizes more appropriately)!

There are a few rules for wearing the high-waist however, and if you stick to them you'll probably become as addicted as I am. 

The first rule is - don't eat! No, just kidding I would never, ever condone a fashion fad that didn't support a healthy lifestyle. Clothes are meant to make us feel good, not feel like fainting.

So seriously, the first rule is: work out where the waistband should sit for your shape.

If you have a rounded tum or a slight pot-belly the waistband should sit flat on the most rounded point, this will mean that the material will fall from this point and not cling to the rounded area.

If you are lucky enough to possess a flat stomach: first tell me how you got it, and secondly you can wear almost any style of high waist - as long as you have a waist that is.

If your stomach area is your problem area, or you seriously don't have a waist then high-waists are not the best look for you. It's alright - wide leg, man-style trousers aren't great for me given I'm short (see we all have our crosses to bear). Instead, steer clear of this trend and look at another that will suit your figure type - or don't go so high with the waist, there are different options to try.

Seriously, I can't impress on you enough - fashion is all about improving your shape and working with it, not fighting it!

The second rule is: Learn what to wear with it. A bit of volume in a blouse looks great with a high waist as it balances out the body. I'm not talking loads of material here - I said a bit.

Personally, I like the look of a really high waist skirt with an off-the-shoulder peasant style blouse - but then again you have to have the confidence and the figure to wear it.

High-waist jeans look great with loose style tees - tucked in of course - and if you are slim and toned tight tees or tops give an hour glass figure. Just be aware that tops tucked in to jeans can lengthen the look of your backside - high-waist man-style trousers and jeans are a bit easier to wear to combat this instead of the high-waist skinny leg. Let's leave that to Kate Moss and the likes I say.

Truth be told, you can work almost any top in a high waist as long as it fits into the waist band without bulging underneath and you balance it out. A high-waisted pencil skirt for office wear looks great with a tailored shirt tucked in - just make sure the shirt is not buttoned up to the neck - you need a little skin on show - shoulders, arms or a touch of décolletage (again, a touch) - to balance out the look of all that material.

The fourth and final rule is - buy some super strength shapewear and step out in confidence.

Look from the rear, high waists are great at making butts look huge. Most people are too short waisted for the look and just look like dorks.

The biggest fashion lesson my sister taught me was to never buy fashion. Stick to what suits you and what you love.
