How the stars stay young

Oct 14 10:56am

Have you ever wondered how the rich and famous never seem to age? Well, now some of the most glamorous stars have revealed their secrets. And instead of using expensive creams and treatments, it seems the key really is as simple as a good diet and a vigorous daily workout. Here are their tips for dropping both the kilos and years.

30s - Sarah Murdoch

Sarah Murdoch, 36, may be busy with her Bonds work, charity commitments and looking after sons Kalan, three, and Aidan, two, but she still manages to fit in three ballet lessons every week. It's a long-held passion of hers - she actually dreamt of a career in dance but grew too tall for it. Yoga, and a good diet also help keep her in shape.

‘It gives me much more energy when I exercise and it's energy I need with the kids,' she says.

Sarah's naturally slim as well, although she says it hasn't always been a blessing - she was hated at school for being skinny.

40s - Kylie Minogue

At 40, Kylie Minogue is glowing with health and looking younger than ever. How? By doing the housework!

‘I enjoy going on a cleaning frenzy,' she says. ‘I use housework to beat stress, relax and tone up - there's no better cure for bingo wings.'

She also follows the French Diet, which is partly based on the glycaemic index and is renowned for its anti-ageing effect, and says her deep cleansing and moisturising regimen is responsible for her flawless skin.

50s - Christie Brinkley

Christie Brinkley keeps her model looks by banning junk food from her house. So, when she craves a snack, the vegetarian opts for sweet potatoes rather than sweets!

The 54-year-old mum- of-three, who wrote the top-selling guide Christie Brinkley's Outdoor Beauty and Fitness Book, also recommends keeping a food diary to take charge of your bad food habits and, ultimately, your weight.

‘There's no real mystery about this - when you must write down everything that goes into your mouth, it forces you to realise exactly how many kilojoules you consume,' she says. ‘It's also beneficial because you can find patterns in your eating.'

60s - Susan Sarandon

‘Beauty comes from the inside - it has to do with what you take in,' says Susan Sarandon, 62.

The busy mum's diet is rich in antioxidants, which decrease the risk of heart disease and cancer, and she's cut back on carbs since hitting menopause at 54 when she started gaining a bit of weight.

She takes calcium and vitamin D for bones and rubs in emu oil for arthritis, plus she exercises often. Her skin benefits from the fact she doesn't smoke, and she stays calm with deep breathing and visualisation.

Jane Fonda - 70s

At 70, fitness icon Jane Fonda has a new secret to looking young - and it's got a lot to do with partner Lynden Gillis.

‘I know I'm in love with him. I'm sure that's why I look younger,' she says.

‘I go cycling and hiking, but sex helps a lot.'

And now Jane, who's had a facelift and breast implants, is happy to put plastic surgery behind her.

‘I want to give a face to an ageing woman,' she says. ‘Eating and dealing with food has been easier as I've grown older. I enjoy cooking now. I eat healthy food, not a lot of sugar. I don't exercise as much as I used to - the pressure to be bone-thin isn't there.'
