Elle Macpherson has been named the greatest model of all time.

The 44-year-old Australian supermodel - whose nickname is ‘The Body' - topped the poll of 3,000 women carried out by British high street store Debenhams, and was lauded for her toned physique.

Elle rose to fame in the 80s and has since amassed an estimated 134 million AUD fortune, thanks to successful stints working for Versace, Dior, Prada and many others. She graced the covers of all the major fashion magazines, and also has her own lingerie line.

American model Cindy Crawford, 42, and 58-year-old British star Twiggy - who shot to fame in the ‘60s and was one of the original supermodels - came second and third in the poll respectively.

A Debenhams' spokeswoman said: "Women prefer curvier figures. They go for girls like Elle and Cindy. Most of the original supermodels feature in the top 10 which illustrates just how iconic their figures are."

Other British stars who feature include Kate Moss, at number seven, and Liz Hurley, who came in at ninth place.
