newidea.com.au caught up with Dancing With The Stars latest evictee, Sunrise Entertainment Reporter James Tobin who lets us in on backstage antics, who he thinks will win and the surprising benefits of 8 weeks training.
Are you relieved?
Relieved? No, to be honest I am a little bit disappointed to be leaving, I would have loved to have stuck around for a little bit longer. It's a little bit disappointing that we can't do a few more weeks but its been such a wonderful experience and I am glad to have made it through this far.
So it's safe to say you are sorry to be going home?
Well you know. I have really enjoyed it. I don't think that there is anyone there who would be glad to go home but you know that is just the nature of the show. Someone has go to go each week.
How long do you train beforehand?
We did 5 weeks of training and then this was the 3rd week. So all up this was the 8th week
You must feel fitter?
Yes definitely. I had my mate's wedding on Saturday and we had the fitting 2 weeks before and then the third fitting a couple of days before and they had to take the seat of my pants out a little bit cause I had gotten a more muscular behind!
So I am definitely a little more fitter, it would have been great to have kept on going because you just get so fit so quickly. Next week we would have been doing another Latin dance and that's the most full on-cardio aerobic workout.
The waltz this week was the sort of slow-up and slow-down and throughout the week, I was waking up really feeling the muscles in my legs.

Were you really nervous before you went out to dance?
Yeah I was actually. The very first week I was really, really nervous because we did a rehearsal of the show and that made me unbelievably nervous. Then I thought this is crazy I am just going to use that experience and forget about the nerves. So after that I sort of left lot of the nerves back there. Then we thought we scored pretty low points with the judges so we knew we had to pull out a good one if we wanted to stay. So it's hard to block out the nerves because you're doing something you have only been doing for 8 weeks and the waltz for one week, live on national television and it's hard to forget that small detail! At the same time as being nervous, it's just surreal to think of myself as ballroom dancing and there is definitely a huge fun side to it as well.
What do your friends say? Do they hassle you?
No, I didn't know if I would get a ribbing from my mates, but everyone has been very supportive and I came off the show last night and had so many messages from friends saying ‘the judges were harsh, and I didn't want to see you go' So everyone has been great. Friends have been having parties on Sunday nights to watch the show and screaming at the TV. Sitting on the edge of their seats, screaming. Very funny!
Do you think that the judges are too harsh?
We got pretty low marks but we didn't really cop it too hard with the comments. I thought they were ok. Helen was great and very constructive every week. And for Mark Wilson to say that I am the kind of guy that he would like to introduce to his daughter was probably the biggest compliment a father could give anyone so I really can't complain too much about what the judges had to say. And I actually met Mark Wilson's daughter last night after the show and she is wonderful. We were just talking about how embarrassing that was for her. He said that on the show and then all of a sudden she started getting text messages off all her mates. Very funny!
Is back stage as fun as it seems? Or are you all just trying to laugh and have as much fun as you can to control the nerves?
There is definitely a little bit of that. Because you are in such a high pressure situation together everyone kind of is really supportive. You are sort of giving each other words of support before you go and then when they come off after they have danced and everyone has done a really good job everyone is cheering and there is a lot of back slapping and congratulating. And that is one the things that I will miss the most, that feeling. Although it's a competition there is a feeling that you are all in it together.
So who do you think will win this year?
I am tipping Danny Green. I didn't see a lot of him over the week because he spent a lot of the day at the chiropractor but Jade and I saw him walk in and he could barely move his neck. And then he pulls out a routine like that with those lifts and looks so graceful. I just think that he did really well last night. I think that the fact that he is a world champion boxer, he knows how to deal with pressure and pain and I reckon he could do very well.
Do you think that you will continue dancing?
I hope so. I have been trying to convince Jade all morning to keep on teaching me. But now that we are out of the competition I have got to try and bribe her!
