Fab fashion blog - Dressing for your age

Sep 19 09:48am

Dressing for your age. This is getting harder and harder to decipher isn't it? With everyone saying 40 is the new 30 and 50 is the new 40 - how are you meant to dress your age when everyone is telling you your age isn't really your age. Confused? I know I am.

The thing is no-one wants to be mutton dressed as lamb - trouble is now they are telling us that mutton is the new lamb - and metallic is the new black. So, in order to put all our minds at ease I thought I'd give you some fail-safe ways to dress your age (in some of the new season trends) and look amazing.

Forever in blue jeans... as the songs goes. Yes just because you are the other side of 40 or even 50 for that matter doesn't mean you have to ditch the denim.

Elle Macpherson took a hammering for wearing a denim mini on a visit to Sydney - much to-do was made about her ageing knees - please if that's all she has to worry about ...!

But that being said, it is best to remember your age and your figure flaws when purchasing any outfit and denim is one of those things that can quickly go from WOW to WOE in a nano second. Don't believe me? Try a short denim all-in-one playsuit - yes, now you get it.

The best thing - denim is enjoying a revamp and there are an array of amazing styles out there that will suit every shape, size and age group. The new high-waisted jeans with a slight flare or slightly wider fit look great and much less "young" than the skinny jean.

Tailored denim jackets, as opposed to the crop biker-style that the 20-somethings favour, are also a great compromise. As is a tailored denim skirt. See, not that hard is it.

Metallics shimmered down the catwalks and looked amazing on the size 6, genetically blessed18-year-old models this season. But how do older complexions and figures deal with this fashion fad? Simply by keeping it understated.

A gold metallic pant-suit will certainly get you noticed, but I'm not sure it would be for the right reasons. Instead, try a soft silver metallic trench or gorgeous pale gold satin top with a pair of tailored pants. If this is still too fashion forward for you, what girl can resist a pretty pair of metallic jewelled sandals or an over-sized tote? You'll still be on-trend without being over-the-top.

Jewel colours will also be seen in all the right places this season but their very nature - bright, attention-grabbing with sleek silhouettes - makes them that little extra difficult to wear for an older age-group. Never fear, where there's a will, there's a way!
Choose a strong coloured blouse (complexion permitting) rather than a neon pink pencil skirt. Or even some sleek black satin pants for evening paired with jewelled tone top. Alternatively a sateen coloured trench looks amazing over a simple black dress. The trick - as always - less is more.

So if you see a fashion trend you love, but can't imagine being able to wear it - don't despair. It's all in the execution and the expertise and that's where I come in. If you're not sure about wearing a particular trend or style simply email me with your issue and I'll do everything in my power to help.

After all, that's what I'm here for.

Until next time

Lee

Hi there, It's good to hear of the simple ways we older "girls" can wear fashionable clothes, it's hard when you are over 60 and still have a reasonable figure and a nice hair cut to find something nice to wear. I don't want to wear "old lady's clothes", regards Jasmine

It's hard isn't it? I'm 36 (have had 2 children) and have a figure way better than a lot of 20 somethings out there (with their muffin tops). But as 40 approaches ever closer i get so concious of looking like some tryhard that wants to maintain her youth. (LOL body great - face not so great!)

If you must wear high waisted pants never tuck your shirt in, or you will look like your butt is 2 feet long. Most women don't have a long enough torso to carry it off. Most 60 years olds can wear 3/4 denims and a nice flowing top, great sandals and look fabulous.

Hi,I would appreciate any advice.I am 54 and will be a mother of the bride in Jan 09. I am 4ft11ins, and would like to wear something cool that covers arms, back and around waist. I like sheer jackets, but don't like pale colours on me. Bridesmaids are wearing light purple.nolapettett@yahoo.com.au

Having turn over 50 I have discovered that thou I still need to wear a hat for our climate I am well past the 'cap' or 'loose beach hat' look. Can you give me the rule of thumb for hat wearing and is there a difference between hat wearing for summer and winter.

Is there a rule book for what to wear when you are 19, 21, 34, 57,63..... I mean - this is silly, dress in what suits your figure/shape/skin tone etc

Im 21 and 4 foot 11 and look about 16. My boyfriend in 27 and I would like to look my age but struggle with finding things I either end up looking like a teeny bopper or trying to dress like my mum. I don't want people thinking he's hanging out with his little sister.
