Victorian Fury claim inaugural New Idea ANL title

The Victorian Fury has claimed the inaugural New Idea Australian Netball League title after a hard-fought grand final battle in Sydney on the weekend against the team from the Australian Institue of Sport.

The Fury took the title with a 15-goal victory, 56-41 - their 11th straight victory in the the competition.

Queensland Fusion held out the Netball NSW Waratahs by just one goal, 43-42 in a physical and tense encounter to claim third place.

Victorian Fury, coached by Melbourne Vixens assistant coach, Carol Byers lived up to the pre-game favouritism as the team to beat. Young shooter, Kathleen Knott inspiring their victory with a game-high 37-goal haul at 90% accuracy and proved a real find of the development competition.

With Fury also calling on the experience of Melbourne Vixens midcourter Madison Browne and the dynamic trio of Chelsey Nash, Sharni Layton and Melanie Kitchen, their player depth was a winning factor.

Congratulations to all 10 teams who participated in this innovative, inaugural competition and produced such high class netball.

Since the very first pass on August 2, the New Idea Australian Netball League has captured the imagination and support of fans across Australia.

Thank you to the fans around Australia for supporting these talented teams in their quest to win the coveted New Idea Australian Netball League title.

* The next major event on the netbal calendar is the International Test Series between the Australian Netball Diamonds, New Zealand and England, with four matches to be played in Australia in October.
