Fab fashion blog - The long and the short of it

Aug 26 11:14am

It's a source of much contention in the office - with hemlines rising again and shorts the big summer trend on the catwalk, what will we really be wearing out on the streets?

The nuts and bolts of it - How short is too short?

I know the fashion world feels the shorter the better this Summer (and believe it or not it's hitting the stores now), but for us real women the lines of distinction can be a little more difficult to figure out.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the micro-mini is a fashion fad best left to the very young. Yes, I know I'm a sage! But seriously, there are some schools of thought that think just above the knee is too short, while others contend this is the safest and easiest length for the majority of women.

To that end I'd be seriously interested to know what you think? After all - it's you I'm trying to tailor things to.

Our fashion pages are about giving our readers an education - showing you what's out there and what's coming up. Offering you style tips and hints on how to flatter your shape, how to look good on a budget and what to where, when. Basically, I'm trying to do all the hard work for you and take some of the guesswork out of it. No, no... don't thank me that's my job! But seriously, in order to do my job properly I need your feedback.

I need to know your thoughts, what you'd like to see on the page, what you want to know about the latest trends - do you care? What concerns you, would you wear above the knee and if so, how high?

Simply put, I need to know what interests you and what appeals to you?

All the while, I have to make the pages aspirational as well as inspirational because, don't forget, not all of us are the same size or have the same style - or budget for that matter.

With that in mind, this Spring/Summer welcomes back the short in a big way and I'm a big fan. I know they're not for everyone but shorts don't have to mean short (just like size 10 these days can mean size 10 or 12 depending on what clothing label you are looking at).

Shorts come in all shapes and lengths - Bermudas (to the knee), mid thigh, micro shorts, longer short shorts etc- and I for one am glad they are an option.

They are an easy wardrobe staple, can be dressed up or down with heels (if you have the legs or are young enough) or ballet flats. Teamed with a smart blazer and small kitten heels or comfortable sandals they look great on well put together older women.

Every Summer, my mum wears long white shorts and nautical striped long-sleeved tees. It's her staple look, has been for years and I love it on her. She looks fresh and young (even though she's definitely not a size 10 and in her mid 60's) and she never looks like mutton-dressed-as-lamb. She simply looks comfortable and confident and I think that is what fashion is all about. Finding your confidence zone, knowing your body shape and going for it!

But seriously, I'd love to know what you think because after all it really is all about you.

Drop me an email and let me know what your thoughts. I promise I'm llistening.

I am 45 I wear my skirts short I think if you wear a nice pair of tights and you still got he legs you can get away with it, leggings under micro mini's wide belts and choose colours carefuly, biggest mistake is bare legs, that just isnt nice on an older woman, so short skirts good tights or legging
