Yes, it's that time again - we're slowly heading out of winter and into spring. Yahoo!
Although I must admit, I will miss the fashion. I love winter fashion - sleek tailored jackets and trousers, boots, coats, simple soft knits, gloves and scarves - I just hate wearing it all!
And yet it's all coming to an end. Well not quite, because now we're entering that tricky time zone when it is so hard to know just what to wear.
You get up in the morning and it's still cool - cold even - well, not if you're lucky enough to live in the more Northern states, but you know what I mean. So you start piling on the knits, jackets and tights only to hear the weather forecast is for 21 during the day (or warmer!). So everything comes off to start again. It's even worse if you have to go out that night.
Inter-season dressing seriously takes a special skill. No-one like to be dressed inappropriately, and when you're over-heating or freezing cold it just makes everything so much more uncomfortable. Let's face it, if you're sitting somewhere freezing cold all you really want is to get home and into a nice hot shower. On the flip side, if you're boiling hot you just want to strip off and that's not always appropriate or advisable!
For fool-proof ways to look stylish whatever the temperature there is one key catch-phrase - Learn to love layering.
Think of it this way: What you put on you need to be able to take off, and put back on, without compromising your dignity, or upsetting an entire room for that matter. So here's how to dress and keep your cool (or look super hot) whatever the weather.
Opaques - amazingly versatile as they can be worn with floaty dresses, pencil skirts or tailored dresses. They look great with wedges if you are confident enough as well as court shoes for a safer option. If the weather heats up simply whip them off (in the bathroom of course) just make sure you moisturise you legs before you put them on in the morning.
Dresses - these are absolutely fool-proof for this time of year. You can team them with coats, jackets or even cardigans - all of which can come off if it gets too hot. Try a belt over the top of the jacket or cardi and if you need to take them off, use the belt to funk up your frock. Just make sure the dress you are wearing suits a belt - you don't want to be carrying it around all afternoon.
Cardigans - I am not talking loose baggy long styles here I am talking more fine knits.
A tailored vest is fabulous and very fashion forward at the moment - they give a great look to a simple dress and can be taken on or off at whim whatever the weather, and better still, because they are streamlined and not chunky, they can fit under tailored coats and jackets.
Pashminas - I don't care what they say - these never go out of fashion for me and you'll realise why if you've eve been caught out without one when the temperature drops. They can be used as scarves tied around the neck or even tied around your handbag strap for when the need arises. They work with absolutely anything - evening dresses, tailored suits, jeans and trench coats.
A light-weight weather proof trench or similar - Cuts wind and rain and can be worn over dresses, jeans, trousers... absolutely anything
A fitted Lycra singlet or tee - Under a cardigan or fine knit will keep you warm - although make sure it is a dressier style which can be exposed without you being embarrassed if the day heats up.
Last but not least - a decent sized tote that you can pop your extra layers into as you need!
Until next time
