I don't care who you are; I'm sure nearly every woman has experienced this amazing phenomenon. One day you're feeling super-slim (well at least slim!) and fabulous, then bam! - the next day you feel fat and frumpy.
There used to be a saying: If you have more than 3 dress sizes in your wardrobe you have an eating issue. My issue is eating - that's the issue! I don't know where it comes from but those couple of extra kilos always take me by surprise - they manage to sneak up on me without warning and it's always when I have some event I have to go to where I want to look divine, not doughy.
So, what do you wear when your weight fluctuates?
It's easier when the weather warms up I have to admit. But there are a few fail-safe items to keep in your wardrobe that should get you out of a bind every time.
A pair of tailored trousers (with a flat front fit) teamed with a floaty blouse that falls over the waist band is great for me when I am feeling bloated, as is an empire line dress.
A well-cut blazer that you can button up over a stretch pencil skirt or jeans that don't cut into your tum, disguises all manner of sins. The tailored style keeps everything looking flat and fabulous.
Heels are heaven sent - they instantly make you look slimmer (as does a spray tan by the way!)
Basic black is a must. Head-to-toe and with a bit of stretch you'll look chic and thin. In winter this look works wonders under a fabulous embellished or bright coloured coat.
A floaty bell sleeve blouse will disguise flabby upper arms if you feel the need and softly fluted A-line skirts that sit flat at the front will disguise larger thighs and bottoms.
And don't ever underestimate the power of underwear or shapewear as it's called these days.
But my favourite all-time item for dressing up in when I'm feeling less than fabulous, is a deep purple satin wrap dress from Leona Edmiston's range a few years ago. The wrap draws attention to my cleavage and not my bloated belly. If I pop on a dress coat over the top and a pair of heels, I‘m invincible.
And while we're at it, I may only be a size 10 but seriously some days my stomach can look like I'm 6 months pregnant so I do feel your pain. Just ask my colleagues - they have to listen to me all day!
But let me know if you have another dress disguise - I'm open to suggestions.
