Jemima's terrorist fear

May 19 02:39pm

She's doing her best to hide it, but Jemima Goldsmith is terrified for her sons and on-off lover Hugh Grant after receiving death threats.

The 34-year-old socialite and Hugh, 47, are living in fear after religious extremists took action against her support of a Muslim think tank that preaches tolerance.

Now she's taking no chances. Jemima has consulted security experts to ensure her London house is practically bulletproof,
and changed her routine to foil any would-be attackers. And when she turned up at a meeting of the think tank, called the Quilliam Foundation, last week, it was with a bodyguard in tow.
Friends say she's shaken by the idea of her loved ones being at risk.

'It's not herself she's scared for,' one friend explains. ‘It's the boys [Sulaiman, 11, and Kasim, nine], her mother and brothers, and Hugh.'

'Jemima's beating herself up over this. She was hot on home security before, but now the house is like Fort Knox. As for Hugh, he's very laid-back, but when he's advised to be vigilant, he has no choice. Everyone is rattled at the moment.'

Jemima, who divorced former Pakistan cricket captain Imran Khan nearly four years ago, has faced hate campaigns before. When she married Imran in 1995, she converted to Islam. Yet as the daughter of a Jew - the late UK financier James Goldsmith - she infuriated many on both sides.

When they split, Jemima returnedto London and a socialite's life of designer clothes, drinking alcohol and a very public love-life, which enrages Muslim extremists.

But friends say Jemima's advocacy of Islamic tolerance won't allow her to hide.

'I'm far from most people's idea of a good Muslim, and it makes me an easy target,' she admits. 'But someone has to stand up and tell the truth. Someone has to give moderate Muslims a voice, and I believe Quilliam is that organisation.'

Jemima is clearly gutsy, but many certainly wish she wasn't in the firing line.
