We chat to Australia's favourite dancer - Jack!

Apr 28 10:41am

What made you try out for the show?

I auditioned for the show because I was craving a challenge. So far, a challenge it has been, which has been very enjoyable. There are so many good dancers around and like them I am looking for the chance to showcase what I have to offer. To be able to work with some of the best in the industry and learn from them is certainly what I wanted to try for.

How old were you when you began dancing?

My memory is that I have always danced. Music has always been in our home and I used to dance around the lounge room with my Mum and sisters. I actually started formal dance classes when I was 4 years old. I was always fascinated with watching my sisters dance, and I would try and copy what they were doing. So basically I have been dancing my whole life.

What style of dance do you feel most comfortable performing?

Funk/hip hop is the dance style I feel most comfortable performing. I feel I can really show who I am in those styles, because they are loose and free moving styles - there isn't a lot of technique required.

Have you performed professionally before?

Yes I have performed professionally in both dance and musical theatre. My first professional musical I performed in was 'The Sound of Music', starring Lisa McCune and Bert Newton. I played Kurt Von Trapp in the Brisbane season, which was such an amazing experience.

I am also part of a professional dance company called Raw Dance Company. I tap and dance in the all male group 'Raw Metal'. We just recently got back from doing one of our productions in Holland, Den Haag - as part of the Holland Dance Festival 2007 - we performed to sell out crowds, a great experience. Raw Dance Company has taken me to many places internationally and nationally, so I am very grateful for that. I want to experience as much as I can.

What has been your greatest achievement in life?

I don't think I could just pick one achievement to be the greatest. My achievements are like stepping stones. Each achievement, each experience is taking me forward. My life isn't over yet, so I guess I will answer that when I retire.

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome?

Juggling school and performing. I get really stressed when I have too much on, and to be in different places at the same time. So I was very happy the day I finished school.

Are you married or in a relationship?

No

Do you have any unusual habits or hobbies?

Um...well my hobbies would be dancing, singing and acting. My unusual habits...whenever I am talking on the phone I can't stand still. I just keep walking and I don't really realize I'm doing it until one of my sisters is stepping in front of me to block me off. I do try to sit down though, but that probably lasts for a good 20 seconds and then I am back up again. It's not like I need the exercise either, so yeah that's an unusual habit.

Have you been on television before?

Yes I have. I just recently did a commercial for Queensland Motorways. I am a surfer dude grooving to music. Most Queenslanders might know it as the 'keep movin'' commercial. I also appeared on the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards with Raw Metal. We've had several interviews and appearances on different shows.

Have you ever performed with anyone famous?

Yes I have. Bert Newton, Lisa McCune, the late June Salter and others in the Sound of Music. I performed with Nikki Webster in her video clip for 'Dancing in the Street', I also performed at the Neil Young concert, which I think was more of a thrill for my parents as I didn't know who he was at the time.

Have you ever seriously injured yourself or had any health issues?

I have injured myself before, but it wasn't serious. I rolled my ankle once and was on crutches for a while. I had to do a lot of strength work in the healing process because I lost all my balance on that ankle - which isn't so good when you are a dancer. But that's probably the only injury. I have been very fortunate so far in my life.
